I just started lifting heavely after football season ended and with baseball fast approaching, my teammates are worrying that i wont be as good as i used to. They think since my chest is so much bigger, i wont be as good of a player. Any ideas on what i should do of if you guys know if it will or will not affect me negatively. O, i bench normally 5 times a week.

Gee, your friends might be right. I wouldnt want to get muscle bound and lose my mobility. (sarcasm).

Now when you say lifting, do you mean benching and curling, or lifting?
Because why would you bench 5 times a week? Whats the point?
If your a pitcher, your really setting yourself up for a shoulder injury by creating a major muscle imbalance.

Outside of that, I have never seen PROPER strength training negatively effect sports performance.

What kind of training are you doing? Be specific.

On bench days i will incline 4 sets, close grip 4 sets, regular bench 4 sets, db press 4 sets, db fly 4 sets, cable cross 4 sets, and pec deck 4 sets Then on the other days i clean 4 sets, lat pull down, front pull down, tricep press down, 3 sets of push ups, 4 sets shoulder press, and 3 sets of pull ups. Thne fridays is of course leg days with heavy squat and all that stuff. I usually do the bench workouts MOn,Wed, Sat, and a little bench mix in on of the other days.

So your doing 20 sets of benching, 5 days a week? Why? What is the point?
There is no need for that kind of frequency OR volume. No point. It is far from effective.
Do you see your anterior deltoids and pectorals as a weak point?
If your concerned with athletic performance, why would you train like a frat boy on a steady prescription of curls and bench.
Train like an athlete.

D1 doesn't mean shit. I've trained with D1 teams. Before I got sick, I was going D1 for wrestling, and a lot of the programs were outdated. And this is now, not even 30 years ago when your coach was a "captain". You think because he was a football player @ Iowa that that automatically means he knows what he is doing?
And so then the bench press is what makes a football player strong? Yea, maybe if your training to be on your back alot. Make sense?
You really think the pectorals are the most important muscles for an athlete? Your doing a bodybuilding routine, and not even a good one at that. Not an athletic training program. Learn the difference.

But then, what the hell would I know?

BEFORE YOU CALL SOMEONE GAY YOU SHOULD NOT ADMIT YOUR A CATCHER,BESIDES ABOUT 8 OUT OF 10 MMA FIGHTERS IN THE UFC COME FROM STRONG WRESTLING BACKGROUNDS!IF YOUR COACH WAS REALLY A D1 IOWA PLAYER THEN ASK HIM ABOUT SOME OF THE GREAT IOWA WRESTLERS THAT CAME THROUGH THE PROGRAM THERE AND MAYBE THE TWO OF YOU GUYS CAN ASK THEM FOR A NEW ROUTINE.

whats wrong with being a catcher? a catcher has the hardest job on the field. i did wrestling for a year and i will admit it was very hard but always very gay. football players dont need to be as cut as wrestlers thus the program we use is more than adequate.

Lol, I've got news for you. You don't want my advice. Why? Because it works. Ask the other members of this site, or any of the people I have trained. If your coach had a clue what he was doing, he wouldnt be a high school PE teacher.
If you don't want advice, don't ask for it. If you are so naive as to the poor methods of your coaches, that you have to get defensive about it, than that is sad.

I didn't have to cut weight to get where I was. I stopped cutting weight my senior year, trained with the best and smartest trainers in the country, and went from unheard of 3rd in the state of NY. I now fight no holds barred, and have no need to cut weight. Why? Becuase my of my training program.
I have news, your program sucks. If you feel adequate being mediocre, then fine.
Do whatever you want, but if you are so set in your thinking that you have to become defensive as to my advice, then don't expect to progress.

Boy, has this thread ever gone down hill. Bottom line is this -- weight-training is good for almost all sports, but the training should be specific to that sport and sometimes even to the position that you are playing. For example, the weight training program for a football lineman would be different than for a basketball center, and the weight training program for a catcher in baseball may be different than for a pitcher.

As far as weight training being bad for baseball players -- yep, that's the reason for all the controversy about steroids in that sport. It's because none of the pros are bulking up. Don't get me wrong -- steroids are obviously a very bad way to go -- but their existence in baseball is a symptom of a perceived need among the pros to increase muscle and power.

You need to find someone who really knows something about weight-training specific to baseball -- perhaps even a trainer at a local college team.

One last comment. Be careful tagging any sport as "gay". Too begin with, who cares. But beyond this -- you would not want to be saying that to some of the guys I wrestled with years ago in college. They'd have your head on a platter.

I don't have a problem with him saying what he wants... Its easy to say stuff like that when your behind the protection of your computer.
My point here is that I don't see the point in asking for advice if you are so set at doing things wrong, that you are willing to get offensive?
Before I left for college, it cost 50 dollars an hour to have me as a trainer. I was making 25 an hour as the highest paid trainer at this gym. I'm offering free advice, why get offended?
