Hi folks! Hope everything is going well for you all. I have been reading a lot of posts lately about a great subject. There have been lots of posts dealing with it, motivation, and how to get/keep it. So how do you get it or keep it? What makes you get up and go the the gym or workout in your home? For some it is simple, they like it. They have been active all their lives and it is a deeply rooted part of their lives. For them motivation is always there it seems. But what about those of us that are doing it to loose weight/stay alive? Where is our motivation? The very act of exercise for some of us is hard, alien and downright evil at times. We know we need to loose the fat and get into better shape, but that alone is not always enough. On top of the exercise is the fact that we can no longer eat the bags of chips, cookies, ice creams and other comfort foods that we had before. SO, I thought I would write some tips or helpful hints that have kept me going even when I saw no real progress. The first is to make goals, weekly, monthly, 6 months, and yearly. These goals are absoutely needed to stay on track. The weekly, n more close in time goals should be easily reached. Like, this week I will do 90 mins of cardio, etc. The longer more distant ones should be much harder to reach, like in 6mo i want to weight 35 lbs less etc. For me in jan I set a goal to bench 250 6reps as a last set, by the end of March. When I reached that goal, I felt like hey the weight loss goals are cake compared to this. That benching goal was the hardest thing weightlifting I have ever done. Now I am focused on the cardio and BF loss goals I have set. The next hint is to stay focused. It is hard to go in each day and keep to a diet, workout routine. But when the gains and goals are met the focus is easier to keep. Never beat yourself up if you cheat, have a week of bad workouts, miss reaching a goal what have you. That will happen more times than you want. The most important thing is to get right back on and contintue. I cheat, have bad workouts etc, yet for 10 years I keep going. I have that final goal in mind and I will get it. That is the mindset you need. Remember that this is not a 6 month program, this is not 3 20 min workouts and BAM you are ripped etc. No this is a total mind, body, life style change. That is the next hint....make this a part of your everyday life, even when you are not lifting, running etc. The sonner you wake up and realize that you are going to be doing this for the rest of your life the easier it will be. ANother thing is this do not go into the gym and spin your wheels. Most if not all of you have done this I have. This is where you go in day after day use the same weight/intensity, doing the cardio or weights and get no where. Go, instead to try to beat the weigths or levels that you did the last time you went in. Finally know that there are people here that have gone thru literally everything you have and then some. So if you have any question, problem, concern whatever do not stop email us or post we will help you out!! Good luck!

I have thought about it but lack the guts to do so....afraid badly of rejection.

Mutt I have to agree, i think you can motivate just about anyone. And what you dont try you get rejected from anyway because it wont happen.

Would like to share what's currently going on with my health, that has me wishing for those days that I skipped out on a workout just because I didn't "feel like it" in hopes that those out there whom aren't 100% motivated will see things in a new light.

I was beginning a new program via the one that was designed from this site about a month ago. In the midst of a shoulder exercise performed on the cable cross over machine I have managed to herniate a disc in my neck along with a painful pinched nerve, as well. I'm not only out of commission for a long time as far as any upper body workouts are concerned, but as of yesterday the findings from my MRI's, my chiropractor is recommending surgery as the only method that will work this out. That has come as a major shock to me, one that I'm finding as I type this, I'm still not over.

It's been a very long 3+ weeks of pain & therapy and a longing to return to the gym. So, I suppose my reasoning for sharing this all with you is that we all tend to take for granted our physical strengths and capacities. I'd appreciate it very much if on those days you find that little voice in your head saying "ahh I'm not up for a workout today" think of "what if you didn't even have the option to do it, or not to do it". Do it for ME, would ya?

Thanks for reading my novel....

Thanks RW...it's just a setback and am sure there's a lesson involved somewhere in it all. Plenty of time to really refocus my energy & take my time devising my "come back" plan. :)

Good luck ebabe, can you do water exercise? I hope you the best of recovery, surgery always sounds scary.
If everyone on the site were to send good thoughts it would sped your recovery (sounds corny, but prayer has been proven to make a diffeence, I say good thoughts because I am not the most religious person but I do believe it directs energy).
Maybe we should put a 'send good thoughts for recovery to ebabe' post up, couldn't hurt, right?
I will do 30 minutes of cardio for you in the morning!
And to answer carivan - yes, EEEWWW, it was sweet and tart and I was starving. Let's just say there are 22g of sugar in one serving and a can is 6 servings. I am suprised I kept it down. Sorry, too much information, eh?
I topped out at about 3000 calories yesterday, i hope I don't do that again. I will take Mutt's challenge!

Asimmer, I can only do walking on the treadmill as far as cardio is concerned, (haven't inquired about water exercise, but that may be alright leading up to my surgery.) I can still do lower body workouts (for now.)

I'm trying to exhaust every other method first, steroid injections into the disc/nerve area over a months' time along with traction treatment. Surgery is a scary word so I'm going to try to hold out as long as possible before causing more harm than good.

It really meant alot to read the responses that you & RW wrote, I certainly wasn't meaning to come across as a sort of sympathy case. My intention was to have people truly take a "time out" and appreciate their health, inturn take care of their bodies to the best of ones' abilities. However, any sort of "positive energy" directed my way would mean the world to me. :)

Thanks again for the great support.

You don't appreciate it until you can't have it. that is too true for so many things. (Youth is wasted on the young).
You don't come across as a sympathy case, we are all pulling for you.
One thing I have learned with injury and rehabilitation is don't limit yourself by what a doctor tells you you will be able to do afterwards - they give you the worst case scenario so you don't get your hopes up and then sue them. The harder you work on rehabbing and keeping everything else working the better your function will recover.
You will still get benefit from working your lower body - they have found that working one part of your body somehow stimulates alll of your muscle fibers (there is a scientific term for it, but I am too tired to pull it up right now). I guess I am just trying to be encouraging.
And I am also counting my blessings, as should all.

I know that I am a newbie on here...but I think this is a great post. Mutt..I have been there with the comfort foods..and I have really had some times that I felt that food was the only comfort I had. I really was discouraged about a month ago..when I went to the dr and he was mad that I had gained 4lbs in the last 6 weeks. I had explained to him that I was lifting weights...but he inspite of that fact said that I was not trying to loose weight or I would have lost it. He had a nasty attitude...so I told him that he looked as if he needed to walk with me in the am...lol. His response is that he has an inside job..I said..well..I have a desk job too. He said that the next time I came in...he wanted to see results. I said at that point...There is not going to be a next time. I just went to a different doc today to get my blood pressure meds..I dont need the negetive attitudes from others, because it is hard enough to be motivated on my own. Thanks for letting others know that they are not alone when it comes to motivation.

We all need it at somepoint. It is important to find a doc that understands weightlifting. I have one and as long as my Bp is stable and my clothes fit better she leaves me alone. Her hubby is a BB as well so she knows that I have more mass than fat and that is the difference. Hang in there 73 and ebabe it will workout for the best!

Hey there guys & gals...just wanted to say that after my traction therapy yesterday & leaving the chiropractors office still in pain and ready to set a date for the herniated disc surgery.... Well, I woke up today with minimal pain and waited all day for it to really come on full force, but so far so good! I can't tell you how thrilled I am to feel somewhat pain free and possibly NOT have to go through with the surgery!

Asimmer, I think the good vibes you & the gang were sending my way worked!!! That and alot of praying on my end as well...we all did something right!

Bring on the motivation!!! :)
