Thought I would post some supplements that can help with healthy cholesterol management. If you have high cholesterol, these can help naturally.

B vitamins....Deficiencies of Folic Acid, and vitamins B6 and B12 have been linked to elevated plasma homocysteine, which is a strong predictor of mortality in patients with CAD. Niacin is one of the oldest therapies for high cholesterol, and many studies show it to be as effective as many prescription drugs.

Garlic....A growing number of studies have shown that garlic protects the cardiovascular system by lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and by preventing the blood from getting sticky.

Green Tea....It contains polyphenols, a potent group of antioxidants, whose benefits include prevention of cholesterol oxidation.

Omega 3 fatty acids.....The omega 3 fats found in flaxseeds, cold water fish and fish oil supplements have been found to protect the heart by lowering triglycerides, preventing inflammation and reducing blood stickieness.

Red yeast rice....Red Yeast Rice, the fermented product of rice on which red yeast(Monascus purpureus) has been grown, is a powerful supplement that has been shown to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.

Good post, B, and a little personal experience, especially in regards to the B3: I'm having problems with my "good" cholesterol being to low (lowest it's supposed to be is 60; mine is 6!). So, besides increasing my intake of things such as peanut butter, olive oil, flax, etc., my doc also gave me a Rx for mega-dosage Niacin. The USRDA is something like 40mg/day, and one tab per day is 500mg! I'm on my second month of the therapy, so, we'll see how it goes for another month.

Glad it was of use to you Michael....

One study in fact compared the effectiveness of Niacin with the statin drug Lovastatin. Lovastatin had a greater benefit in reducing LDL(bad cholesterol) while Niacin was more effective in elevating HDL cholesterol. Niacin ws also more effective in lowering Lp(a), a particularly bad form of LDL cholesterol. Lovastatin had no effect on Lp(pa).

From my studies, an effective dose is 1500-3000 mg. per day, depending on your cholesterol level.

Just a little pick me up for ppl with high LDL, I'm only 22 and I've had high LDL and Tryc since I was 15 and didn't do anything about it so now that I'm training and dieting I've gone from HDL 4 to 30+, I have lowered my Tryc from over 250 to under 190 and my LDL has gone down by more then 20 points with the HDL:LDL ration being 1:6 when 1:5 is "normal" and that was in the first 4 weeks.
It didn't come off easy though, I've cut out white sugar TOTALLY, I'm taking Omega 3 (from fish oil) daily and multi vitamins, I'm eating everything non fat, non fried. I don't think my total fat intake is more then 15-20g and 90% of it is non saturated fat.
Lowering you LDL isn't that hard, just watch what you eat.
