thanks for the input everyone. menace, i think im going to leave upper body completely out for a few reasons. i dont want to develop a strength imbalance primarily, as i think that would be just another obstacle to overcome later on. also like 519 said, if i try to jump back into training after having semi-trained for a few weeks, im risking further injury. i also have exams coming up, so this will give me a chance to get some extra studying in.

so i broke my hand last night, and i have to get casted on monday. whats worse is the fact that its my writing hand. im just wondering how i can keep up my workout plan. im thinking just staying with leg training and cardio.. the cast im going to have will pretty much immobilize my entire left hand and forearm (ive broken this bone before)

I would continue as you say with cardio and legs. I broke my little finger one time, and though it is not the whole hand, a cast was put on that pretty much immobiized my whole right arm to the elbow. I found I could do push down movements with it, like upper cable triceps. I also found I could do some dumbbell work using straps(takes the pressure off the hands).

Train uninjured side....this should allow you to keep more muscle while your injured side heals.....

This was discussed in powerlifting section in wrestler's thread of broken foot....

Cissus may not be a bad idea.

i broke my wrist last winter and the best advice i have for you is to not rush back into lifting. i did and it just set my healing back. take care of legs and your cardio, but be very sure you are healed before you start lifting again. everytime i break something i rush back into the gym and end up worse off or with nagging injurires...i should really take my own advice. good luck.
