So there you are, you maybe male/female, you maybe anywhere from 15-who knows. You are sitting on the couch watching tv. As you flip thru the many channels and eat chips while sipping on a cola of you choice, you flip past a channel that has something that finally cathces your eye. On this channel are men and women exerciseing. Whether it is Tae-bo, Tony Little, Body by Jake, or espn in the morning there you are spellbound. You knew about people that move and look like these on tv. Suddenly you feel and urge, at first you think you have to pee, but no it is something different. Your hand moves grasping for something, you heart is racing. You sit there for a half hour watching, then go to bed. That night you dream about a body like those you saw on tv. The next day as you go to work, you think about that all day. AS you drive home, you make a decision, you are going to join a gym, buy some home equipment, start walking whatever it takes. So you start to read and research and finally start a program. You are on your way.......This maybe the way it started for you, or not. What it shows is that many see these programs and get the urge to start workingout. Many do so keep at it for a while and then stop. Some keep going and reach their goals. What makes that difference? I believe the thing that makes some go on and others stop is reason why ther are doing it. This makes a huge difference, but it is a hard thing to pin down. My reason is for health, and to beat the iron and gravity. I want to lift it just to say I did. But your reason maybe cause you want to go on stage, or that you play football etc. What this reason gives to you is the motivation to go to the gym. This in turn leads to the desire to lift, sweat, and sometimes if you are lucky cause pain. Whatever the reason it had better be one that means something to you. I would bet those that lift and leave are doing it because they want to impress someone, or that they fear that they will not be liked if they are not buff and cut. But when confronted with the daunting task of real weight lifting get scared, they wanted the fast fix. Once you lock that reason in and go at it and realize that it is within your grasp, weightlifting becomes more of a friend then foe. I really believe that those that do it for the wrong reasons do not feel that way. ANyway that is my take love it hate it what have you. Lift hard!

Boy Mutt,
That got me thinking big time...I lift because I like the feeling I get working out, I lift because it makes me happy...while I'm lifting and afterwards, especially when I can see some definition.

After considering this I also realize that something else that makes me happy negates my weightlifting...that is food. I've always equated food with soothing or celebration. So now I am at a crossroads...in order to see the gains I want and have the body I want I have to give up my comfort, some of my happiness. OR I continue to lift and eat but not be as happy as I could be with my body, but happily eating. I hope this doesn't sound lame or weak, but it has sunk in that I am in charge of this...which way do I want to go???

Great post Mutt!

Metraa I am right there with you. I love to eat and I have to tell you that I also find it hard to keep it under control. As a result I do not have the gains and progress I want. But I also like to eat clean, and like to lift so I am managing it somewhat I cheat, I will admit it but I do not let that stop me. I just keep going at it. So hand g in there and keep at it!.

I like to eat too. Yes I cheat. For me it is all about moderation. A lifestyle change that I will be happy to do the rest of my life. Yes I could have done things the way I did before but I like my results better this time around. Before I was the rabbit. This time I am the turtle.

Lifting weights has brought to me benefits that I did not even imagine. I will not stop since I have the bug now! :)

:) Melissa

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

That was tight, and so so true. The reason we lift plays a big factor in motivation. For me, I started because I was the skinny, weak kinda guy. Getting girls was never a problem, but I hated being weak. I started lifting so I'd be able to hold my own if somebody tried to start something with me, but that soon changed. I started to get sucked in by everything weightlifting had to offer. I started to love the pump, the pain, and overcoming things that you thought you could never do. It was no longer something on the side, it was a passion.
