How accurate is this? I just did mine here at ft and I am suprised I am still alive from the results. It said ideal should be <20 & 25> and I am 37.---------------------------- Never be afraid to try something new. Remember the ark was built by amateurs, The Titanic was built by professionals. |

I have talked about/researched this with a co-worker, and I just saw it on the Nightly News. What i heard is that it isn't too accurate. It had Arnold as obesese, Mel Gibson in the category below obesity. What is does is cause you to look into your weight issues more, which is what the government is encouraging. So, by saying that some 30% of the country is overweight (according to the govt and the BMI) they are trying to get people to be more health conscious. They used 2 specific examples on the news of people who were clearly in top shape and they were considered seriously overweight and obese on the BMI scale. Both were body builders, one more of a Mens fitness cover type, the other the former Mr. Austrailia. So, if you are muscular, and in shape, the BMI won't take that into consideration.... Hope that helps a little. -------------- Ischjli "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." -- T. S. Elliot |

Thanks I know I still have much body fat to get rid of, and I am going to with ft. This BMI thing had me going. I have always been big but strong. Never thought of myself as obese.-------------- Never be afraid to try something new. Remember the ark was built by amateurs, The Titanic was built by professionals. |

That sound great Mutt go for what best suits you. Like I have said I'm not much into body building or power lifting. I just want to be the best me I can be, and be the best martial artist I can be, and diet excercise and weights seem to be the complete picture to reach my goals. When my doc told me my ideal weight was 170 lbs from some shart I dam near fell of the chair. That was my wieght in grade 8 when I entered a shot put throwing comp. placed 3 out of 50 felt good. So i guess I just keep plugging away doing the best I can.-------------- Never be afraid to try something new. Remember the ark was built by amateurs, The Titanic was built by professionals. |

I've heard the same stuff that isch is talking about. I have a BMI rating of 26 and I wouldn't consider myself overweight even slighty. I think the BMI might be going the way of the Doo Doo. I believe the "waist to hip ratio" system is gaining steam as a method of determining one's body composition in relation to certain health risks. This site explains it further. http://www.heartanalyzer.com/whratio.shtml -------------- Anything can be done |

I wouldn't take the BMI etc. readings here as gospel - I know my body fat % and it was pretty far off according to the calculations I did here. Keep in mind that if you are an athlete, these calculations really do not work! All sorts of considerations can give you a false reading. You are a martial artist, so if you train more than twice a week or more you are getting yourself in good shape - although I have to say that lifting is a good activity to supplement any martial arts training - it balances out all the cardiovascular activity, and strenghthens the area around your joints, which helps in kicking/punching and grappling/throwing techniques to keep you strong and prevent injury. -------------- from the lair of the Wolfe... |

I too usually train at least 2x a week for about 2.5 hours but...(pathetic sigh)I just got a nasty knee injury on accounta my 180 lb partner fell on my leg when I was demonstrating a shoulder throw. Displaced bone, ligament damage. *&@$. Have had to stay on the sidelines and watch for the last couple weeks.Note to self - move leg back. Kata is like, patterns or forms, correct? Hapkido is Korean so the terms differ. -------------- from the lair of the Wolfe... |

Yes Kata is the same as forms & patterns sorry to here about your injury. We do not see many injuries other than muscle pulls. Accept for me as a few of us like to really go at it some times a little blood during these times the worse I have had is when an instructor did a side snap kixk toward my I blocked with my leg he broke his foot and the bone came out and went into my leg ouch. We laugh about it now though we are blood brothers. So I guess after re reading this post disregard the part about not many injuries.lol-------------- Never be afraid to try something new. i'm considered "obese" in every single non-detailed medical exam there is (BMI, JAMA, NEJM, etc.). what really matters is what's going on on the inside. just keep getting your regular physicals and panels.-------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

Sempai - Ewww...that sounds painful. Nothing serious - riiight. I'm actually doing better - I'll be back in the game again in a coupla weeks - yeehaaaaw! Well, doing light duty but hey I'm not complaining. S'long as I can test within the next month it's all good. As they say, it'a ALL part of our martial arts training. *wolfegirl strides in stately manner towards mountaintop to be enlightened* SO anyway it's safe to say, I think, that you can toss that BMI thingy out the window. Amen. -------------- from the lair of the Wolfe... |
