If your doing pull-ups i'm guessing your going into the marines. i've been in for about 3 yrs and i can tell you the best way to get better at pull-ups is to do pull-ups. if you can't do many, most gyms have a gravitron for assitted pull-ups. i would use this every other day. initially you may loose a couple pull-ups but in about 2 weeks you'll begin to see an improvement. good-luck

ok lets go back to old school do as many pullups as you can do. than using your legs help your self back up and resist the weight in a 10 count go for 8 reps total do this in the morning and evening.swap your grips up per training season and yeah you better do your pushups LOL

first, i think the waist strength is important to complete pull-up,so you should do some exercise to make your waist more strong, then do more and more :dumbbell::dumbbell::-), btw english is not my mother language , i hope these won't make you mistake.

Just an idea, regarding your pull up problem, have someone hold you legs and push you up while you hold on to the bar. Maybe that might get you started?

I was just like u before,
This is the best way:

Use the chin-up assist at about a weight u can sort of handle, say 30kg. Try and do 4 x 8. The day after tomorrow u will do the same wieght but try and squeeze in 9/10 in every set. Once u can do 10 decrease the weight by 1 notch. And then do 4x8 again. If u keep this a routine every other day u will soon put the weight lower and lower. Before u know it u'll be able to do it without the assit seat.

Hope this helps.
Thanks

I was going to post this but you beat me to it. If you don't have the strength to do a pullup, the best way to get that strength is by doing negatives.

also, if you are asking if doing push ups will help you build strength for pull ups, then no, not at all.

I would stay away from machines, and would concentrate on doing negatives. Machines like the gravitron are really good at making you think you are building strength, but the reason a pull up is such an effective upper body tool, is because you have to stabilize the whole way up. A machine takes this away.

Here is another couple of pull-up ideas:

Put a chair beneath the bar and bend your knees. Try to use your quads as little as possible.

Or, try using stretch bands. Attach them to the bar and yourself so they are stretched out while you are down.

In unrelated news- Marines are not the only branch that do pull-ups.

pull ups... I always wonder if there is some hidden muscle group I don't know about when it comes to these. Use an assisted machine, train your back, your arms. Once you can do just one pull yourself up and hold yourself there for as long as you can. Keep doing that and training the arms and back eventually you'll be able to do 2 then 3, 4 etc. Drop useless bodyweigh IE fat as well. 10 pounds can be the difference between getting yourself up there and only making it half way.

okay for the past two weeks ive been doing assisted pullups, about 50 each day, and I can feel it coming but I think my real problem is that my weight, im 5'9 and weigh 180lbs, I need to lost 20-30 lbs a few weeks ago i was 170lbs, this is really disaapointing, ive been watching what i eat but also trying to get my metabolism faster and since i run practically every weekday for 1-1/2 I shouldn't have gained wieght, but then again ive been drinking lots of water. Someone please help me lose 20-30 lbs in 3 weeks because thats when i go to bootcamp.

we all know pull ups are rather difiicult to do, even for me (although im a lean, featherweight person), i cant do a lot in one go. the qstn is, is it worth the effort..does it really build muscle enough? is it really worth it?
