I tanned at Hollywood Tans the other day. They put me in a booth that they claim has only 2% UVB rays for 5 minutes and I got some color which is all I was looking for.
The problem is that I know Tanning beds are bad. I felt guilty the entire time I was in there. I want to maintain my color, but not at the expense of my skin. What do people here think? I know that everyone here is in some way health conscious and well informed. |

You can get a spray on tan at a lot of spas.

like anything.. MODERATION!
don't overdo it and make sure to restore the moisture with good lotions and skin care.. I use dyoderm mixed with pro tan to keep me dark in-between.. I use the tanning beds only to give me a base and maintain, 1-2 a week at most. good luck and happy tanning! -------------- If you are tired of your life, your body, yourSELF.. CHANGE IT! |

I'm afraid I disagree - tanning beds are like smoking - not ok even in moderation.
Like sivysivy said, you can get fake tans in salons. They are safe, and these days it's hard to tell them from the real thing. -------------- The path to righteousness is a cycle path |

I have to add my input. I tan under the advice and direction of a physician (strange but true). I was concerned also about the effects that tanning would have and expressed these to him. His reply was that although it is not the safest thing in the world the real key is to not get burnt. He went on to say that when you burn repeatedly (even a minor sunburn) over a period of time cells can mutate as they repair and thus cancer can be formed.
Also he mentioned that if you suffer from SADS tanning has been shown to alleviate many of the symptoms involved with this disorder (I do not have SADS so that is at least two disorders that could possibly benefit from the effects of tanning). Finally he compared it to the media hype of consuming eggs that took place not to long ago. Papers written often show examples of extreme use and base many of their clinical findings on the effects that over exposure can have. Now I know this will quite likely open a can o' worms but thought I would share what at least one physicians' stance on the matter is. |

You don't need to expse your skin to UV if you have sads - you can get light boxes which deliver a very small dose of UV to your eyes which are effective.
I agree that getting burnt is the worst thing, but even tanning is a sign that the skin has been damaged. Just because one physician endorses something, doesn't mean it's true (just think about atkins :OP) My brother was very lucky that his melanoma was caught early and he has made a complete recovery, but our friend wasn't so lucky - he died aged 29. I can't sit back and not say anything when this subject comes up - PLEASE look after yourselves, and think about what you are doing. |

Personally I can't stand to see a girl abnormally tanned for the season. All I can think of is "rode hard put away wet" Hence the leather look.

I work out in the sun and have seen many sides to tanning... My boss has had melanoma 3 times, and is encouraged to tan in a tanning salon during the winter to keep her from burning in the summer; she has been doing this for 20 years! I have seen sun poisoning due to the sun's rays at peak hours ( one of our guards, trying to tan for her summer job, accidently put on an OLD sunblock!). I have fair skin... in order for me not to burn all summer, I must tan at least 3 weeks before I start working; I am allergic to sunblocks. We have to work 8 to 16 hour days at a pool (which magnifies the suns rays), majority of the time with no shade!
A little sun will not hurt anyone! June 17, 2005 -(http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4707987) An epidemiologist made the provocative suggestion that getting some sun unprotected might be good for you -- that the increased levels of Vitamin D created by the sun exposure could help protect against certain cancers. You still need to wear sunblock, and still need to keep from getting burned. Also, dry skin is damaged skin... moisture is important! Chris |

Princess,
I am sorry to hear of your brothers past illness as well as your friends untimely death!! I can't help but think that your personal experience plays a large role in your strong stance against tanning. I am in no way saying I have a clue as to the circumstances surrounding your brother and friends illness. I will agree that like almost everything else (alcohol, driving, sex, foods, etc.) unmoderated, unprotected or over use can have serious and sometimes deadly consequences. The literature I have read tells of case after case of skin cancer caused by tanning. What it doesn't tell is how the subjects used these devices. This is where I believe my physician is more knowlegeable than the general public. He has the training and access to the whole truth behind the studies. He readily admitted it CAN be dangerous however pointed out the many factors that can affect the end results. As far as the comparison to Atkins, it isn't the same. Dr. Atkins made millions off of his half truths by marketing his "findings". On the other hand I don't think my physician is planning a book about the wonders of tanning in the near future LOL!! He has nothing to gain and everything to lose by not disclosing the facts surrounding something that can cause harm. I guess in the end we will have to politely agree to disagree. Once again, I am truly sorry to hear of your loss! |

It's ok, I know I am an anti-tanning fascist, I just hope it makes people think a little harder about what they are doing.:)
My other point was just that physicians aren't all knowing, and it does no harm to question what you are told by them. |

Information and new research comes out so often it's nearly impossible to tell what's right and wrong now a days. I take the approach of "anything in excess can kill you"...so far I'm still alive so I assume my approach is working.
