Too heavy for joints?

Is there a such thing as being too heavy for your joints? I am 5'5" and weigh 170 lbs. I do a lot of lifting and training on a day to day basis. I asked my doctor about this ache in my knees and he told me that I was probably too heavy for my joints. He told me that for my height I am entirely too heavy. I told him that I do a lot of weight training and he just brushed me off telling me that I need to lose about 50 lbs. And when I lost this 50 lbs the ache in my knees would go away.

I hate to go against doctors.. and i'm not saying he's wrong but i can suggest another possible condition..

That being something called 'osgood slchater desease'. It's spelt something like that. Essentially, your cartilage 'leaks' out between the joint and causes pain. You usualy have a little lump under your knee cap if this is the case.

EITHER WAY you can easily invest in a knee support. I have knee problems and it helped me.

firechic, no offence but I think your Dr. is being rather dismissive about your knee pain without doing some investigation as to what is causing the pain. You haven't filled out your profile, so I don't know your age, but I started to have all sorts of aches and pains after about 35. I think it is just plain wear and tear from age (running, poor posture, swimming etc). Sure, loosing wt may help, along with being good for you in many other ways, but it is no guarantee that your knee pain will go away (I highly doubt it). Go see a sports medicine specialist or physiotherapist and have it properly assessed. I'm currently treating my shoulder and hip pains with physio, message and have just started taking glucosamine and celadrin for joint support (you can do a fitbuddy search at the bottom for more info on celadrin/glucosamine).

Hope you're able to get some proper treatment for your pain.

hey i had the same problem recently but i am heavy however he told me for each pound is 7 pounds of pressure on the bones this was a sports medical doc also said at 36 there is some thinning in the cartalidge behind the knees..have you tried a knee support also 2 things he added to me was i use the tred mill and also leg extensions is first to increase elevation takes stress off the knees and also to not do a full lock of your knee and use the extension to build up there if it continues there aree things he can try including cortisone see a sports doc for this..thanks cindi
