Just make sure you are getting 1-1.5 gr of protein / lb of bodyweight / day and you will grow if you work hard enough. Shakes are great but not the be all and end all take regular meals with quality protein containing food and it the ratio above and your body will have all the protein it needs in your case.

Zen...pick you up a PWO shake mix...it can't hurt and will help to reinforce your muscles and I think you can get a 2lb bucket for like $15. Otherwise eat right and lift heavy and you will see gains. You're just starting out, correct? So don't worry about it right now...you will likely see gains no matter what you do as long as you lift and eat right consistently. Maybe just start out with a 40/40/20 diet (that's 40% Protein and Carbs, and 20% Good fats)
If you want to be a body builder then, Yes you need to be very specific in what you eat and what you do. If you're just looking for a bit of mass and/or definition and you've never worked out before then you'll get it. Pick up a mass building program from here and hit that for 8 weeks while watching your diet and eating 5-6 times a day.
Honestly don't overcomplicate right now...just get into action. Good luck!

Why 1-1.5 gr of protein per lb of body weight?

This is a general guidline to ensure your amino acid pool is high enough throughout the day to aid your growth. But remember you can't store protein it flushes through your sytem within about 30 mins of being absorbed into your bloodstream so space it out evenly taking regular moddest meals. The 1.5 gr / lb is a max so try to get as close to it as you can but don't stress yourself if your a little below we are all genetically different some may need that amount others can grow on a lot less. you will do fine if you Work hard eat well and rest.

ironmonga, I believe there has been a controversy over whether protein is excreted through urine. I think that's what you were trying to say. Some say that it's true, yet others believe that a calorie is a calorie and you can still gain weight with protein alone. I'm sorry if this isn't what you were talking about.

DX, I'm not disputing the calorific side of protein yes theres 4 cal/gr. By saying flushes through your system I'm geting at the usefullness to your muscles protein is an energy source and can go down as fat if not used but it can not be converted again into protein. It can be converted to glucose but what I am getting at is that if you take that figure of 1-1.5/lb and take half in the morning and half at night then your likely to lose most of it as waist or store it as energy but your muscles will only take up a certain amount of amino acids at a time so this is why you should be carefull to space your protein intake evenly through out the course of the day.
