hey,

i recently started a freetrainers program helping me to gain muscle, it appears 2 b working as im noticing gains on my arms, even at this early stage.

but i still have some fat around the abdomen which i'd like to get rid of and hence am tempted to do cardio 3 times a week in the monring, mainly running.

although ive heard that doing cardio wud ruin my hard work in the gym putting muscle on, wat do u recommend i do, stay off the cardio and keep working out?

thx

I was for a long time in the "anti cardio" camp when bulking. But, I have found through experience, heartache, and pain the necessity of cardio to keep those nasty love handles at bay. For an ounce of muscle you may gain by not doing cardio, you will gain some stubborn fat that when you go to diet, you will probably have to lose that little bit of muscle you gained and maybe a bit more to shed those nasty little love handles. Make no mistake about it, your body fights you hard at a certain point. Everyone thinks no, that won't happen to me! Sorry, but it will. You or noone else has the "magic" diet or training regimine that somehow noone else has thought of!:dumbbell::big_smile:

I'm still a strong believe in the anit cardio campers.
It's hard to determine what cardio really is. It refers to heart and lungs as far as I know. You can increase cardio fitness doing weights. What most people mean by cardio is aerobic exercise. I honestly believe that weights are the best option for burning maximum fat.

Anything but low levels of aerobic exercise is going to be detrimental to your muscle gains.

The key is to use the right method to burn fat. 5 sets of bench press with 3 minute rest isn't the answer.

Weights are by far the best way to burn fat in the long run. (see my post, cardio questions, a sticky).

I am referring to an extension of your diet for fat loss, which is where long duration 50% hr for instance is ideal. Will save muscle and extend your diet macros, as you cannot cut calories forever.

Change exercise/slimming therapist's. Hopefully you are not paying him/her. If so the only thing that will be slimming is your wallet.

Fat cannot change into muscle, nor vice versa.

Building muscle will burn fat.
