I'm on a cutting phase. I want to burn 12-15 pounds of fat by the end of June, or get as close to it as possible, while maintaining as much muscle as possible, obviously. I'm not sure which exercise approach is better. The two approaches I can take are:

1-
HIIT in the morning, steady paced treadmill jogging in the evening 3x a week with the other 4 days used for weights, including bi's and tri's; chest; back and shoulders; and legs.

2-
Altering HIIT and steady pace 6x a week, with weights for one body part also on that day, including biceps; triceps; chest; legs; shoulders; and back.

Which would you recommend? I'm thinking that the cardio and weights might be easier to maintain because I don't have to do too much weight lifting for one body part, except on leg and chest days. Plus, it might produce a better state of mind doing cardio and knowing you're done with it for the day instead of knowing you have to go back to it later, but what do I know...

I am not a big fan of HIIT. I would opt for option 1 but doing longer duration cardio at about 60% max hr. To really add a wallop to things, after you level out a bit on this program, add in a cardio session on your weight days 6-8 hrs. post weight training.

Of course, your results are going to diet driven.

Keep your weights high, do not change your workouts to low weights high reps, you will only lose muscle doing this. Let your diet and cardio do the fat burning, keep the weight training intact, that is how you built your muscles. Proper nutrition will keep the muscle and you will burn the fat with the program.
