I notice that when I stand in line for example, or walk with a backpack for a long distance, even if the pack is very light, I develop a soreness in my shoulders. It feels like it is stress related, and it has been this way since I was a kid, so I wonder if their is a way to prevent this.

well...if it's been an ongoing problem for many years my question then is why haven't you went to a doctor and have it checked out...?

I suggest you go and get a full check up....go to a specialist if necessary....it could be shoulder join or it could be a neck problem....

if you're cleared to work out...start weight lifting to strengthen your shoulders....you can also take gloucosomine/choindroitin/MSM...or just gloucosomine/choindroitin....it takes about a month to kick in...but it's been successful for my shoulder problems....www.vitamins.com....very cheap up to 80% off on many supplements...

I can totally relate to your shoulder problems. I can't even carry a purse over my shoulder. I too have had this problem since I was a kid. It got worse when I had kids of my own, due to lugging them around-especially while carrying them on my shoulders. I kind of ignored it, but as I got older, it has gotten worse. Turns out it is primarily a postural problem with my neck and shoulders, which has been agrivated over the years with general things like computer work, lifting kids etc. etc. Unfortunatley, now that I've been training, it has resulted in tendonitis in my shoulder. Ah, aging is fun!! Anyhoo, what I've found has helped the most is good form while lifting, good posture (shoulders back and down, chest out, chin up) I've also been going for physio and massage therapy to help loosen up my neck and shoulders. I know others that have had success with ciropracters as well. Good posture makes a huge difference!! I also agree with menace...get it checked out by a Dr. first!
Hope this helps!
