Am I correct to say, chin ups are performed with the open hands facing away from the body and a pull up is performed with the open hands facing toward the body? Also, do these exercises work the same muscle group or are they designed to target their own specific group?
no. vice-versa. And yes, they target pretty much the same muscle groups. You can interchange them for sake of variety though.
