I was told that if you squeeze your butt muscles for 20 secs it will help build muscle. I have been doing 3 sets of 10 each day. How big will the benefits be?

I would say none. Thats really not much of an exercise, especially for a muscle like your glutes (butt).
You want to strengthen you glutes? One word: Lunges.
These are probably the most brutal butt workout you can do.

I know squats and lunges are the best for your glutes but I just had surgery on my leg and it's gonna take me a few more weeks before I can consider incorporating them in my workout. Basically I am just looking to continnue with SOMETHING in the meantime. Any suggestions?

I am not sure what they are called, Lying Bridge Extensions or something. But what you do is lie down on the floor, put your feet on the bench, table, couch, etc. and push your butt muscles until your legs are straight. This also works out the hamstrings.

Another good one is to lie on the floor on your stomach, arms bent at elbow and along side body, hands toward head, now tilt your body a bit to the side and raise your leg up and down, you can feel it working! I don't know what it is called and I am sure a diagram would work much better to describe, but it is a good workout!

thanks so much! I really like this one crispy it lets me isolate the muscle w/o putting too much pressure on the wrong parts. Vedakathryn you can definetly feel it working! Would ankle weights make it more effective, and if so what weight?
