3 sets, in which is the most weight?

let's say I'm doing 3 sets of bench press. Some huge guy in the gym told me and my buddies the other day just keep adding weight for the rest of your sets. does that mean that for my first set im doing 180 lbs, second 185, and third 190? This doesn't really make sense because I figured out that on the first set I can do the most weight obviously cuz the muscles get tired... Shouldn't it be 190 on the first set, 185 on the second, 180 on the third? or the same weight for all of the sets? any help would be appreciated... Thanks

what you're describing is called pyramiding and it is very effective. when you add the weight, you decrease the number of reps you perform. it would look something like this:

• 10 reps x 180
• 8 reps x 185
• 6 reps x 190
• 6 reps x 190

this challenges your body to up the intensity. even though you're doing fewer reps, you're making your body produce a maximum effort.
