My friend went from 240lbs to 170lbs with 10bf% in a year.
So i tend to ask him advice on diet, and weight training routines. Recently I showed him my diet plan and he told me that i was eating too much carbs and if i keep this up, I will be gaining weight. I was pretty shocked to hear that carbs make you fat. I thought it was the total calorie intake that determines your weight gain or loss.

This is my diet:

Breakfast- bowl of oatmeal(I add a scoop of protein), whole wheat bread with tsp of peanut butter

Snack - canned tuna with fruits

Lunch- turkey sandwich with whole wheat bread along with veggies

Snack - Protein shake with skim milk

Dinner - Brown rice, lots of veggies and some lean meat

Snack - cottage cheese with non fat yogurt.

He is telling that complex carbs are not good, but isn't carb determined whether it is bad or not by Glycemic INdex?
grr, i am confused. I don't want to listen to him but since he is a living proof of weight loss and stuff, it is hard for me not to believe him.

I think he is pulling your legs....eating a vast amounts of carbs, fats, proteins and not working them off will cause you to gain. I would cut one of the portions of breads out that is it. Ask him (for me) how he lost cause I bet you he lost a lot more muscle than you will, I also think you need more protein.

A surplus of unused calories will make you fat....I have relatives too that are like.....you eat so much carbs and meat etc etc. Adkins is their way of life......however "low carb" for me is like 150-175 carbs..... and I can usaully loose about 2 3 lbs month(when I want to)....they will loose 8+ lbs month.......and I say 1.....half of that is water, 2 I feel like crap if I go that low on my carbs...3 i'm more active and an athlete.

if you set around and eat suger cookies all day...with milk.....plus yoru meals or whatever yes you well gain fat.

but say I eat about 10 slices of wheat bread in a day.....I won't gain near as quickly cause , wheat bread is a healthy carb.

The Glycemic Index is broken. It doesn't take into account the large portions you need to eat of some foods to reach their GI carb intake. Carrots are a prime example, they have like a 99 on the GI. You would have to eat 2 lbs of carrots (about 25 large carrots) to get to that level.

Your friend may have lost all that weight because he was heavy to begin with. Just changing the level of activity you do can really affect your body weight.
