Hi,
So I'm thinking of taking up karate-do shito-ryu next year. I just wanna one thing- Does it help build muscle and tone me up? I'm skinny and exercise 4 times weekly and still no great results... Would karate-do give me that extra boost? Would other forms of martial arts help me too? Thanks.:) |

What is the extra boost you speak of? If you are talking bulk, then the answer is no.
If you are looking to gain weight, and you say you can't, you are not consuming enough calories for your needs. -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Karate will just make you more active, and burn more calories.......thereby makingyou loose weight.
It will however help in agility, flexability, and explovness. -------------- GO into battle as if was your last, cause thats the only one you loose! |

kumaran karate will likely make you strong and maybe eventually get you to gain more weight...Most martial artists do a lot of push ups, sit ups, chin ups and such...So by the time you get to doing 100 push ups..you will definately be strong and probably more muscular....is this the fastest way to go about it? no....bodybulding/weight lifting can help you bulk up a lot faster...and when you become more active you will need to consume even more calories otherwise there's a chance you might lose evne mroe weight...although your appetite will also adjust with the additional needs of your body...
Eventhough you 'exercise 4 days a week' that does not guarantee any magical results quickly...weight lifting is a long term commitment...perhaps you are also not setting realistic short term goals...for example 5-10 pounds a month in bench is a more realistic goal than 50...50 is possible but very unrealistic... Also to get most results out fo your work outs you need very high intensity...doing machines for 3 sets 10 reps...etc as I see people do in gyms will not get you very far...to give you any more additional advice you will need to give us mroe information to your training... Also if you're skinny and have trouble gaining weight...consider eating extra healthy snacks in between meals...assuming you eat at least 3 a day now...carry nutrition bars...that have at least 15-20g protein..which should eliminate most of the crappy sugary ones are sold at stores...also try eating yogurt with maybe a banana or apple, consider making protein shakes and sipping them, makign peanut butter sandwiches, etc, you get the point...but remember although you need to take in about 1 g of protein per body weight for weight lifting to gain muscles...your overall goal is to boost your total daily caloric intake....try to take in 100-20 extra calories a day...and keep trakc of your weight...when you can keep your increased weight for a few weeks, try to increase calories again and so forth...this will allow you to gain fairly lean muscle mass...this ofcourse goes along in conjunction with your training...gl | |

I have been doing Martial arts fro about 6 months now. I have noticed some mussel mass increase because of the large amount of push-up and sit ups I have been doing in and out of class. I have noticed a lot of weight loss not talking 100's of pounds but I have lost 15 lbs in 6 months time but the big thing I have noticed the most is the agility and speed that I have increased with as well as the confadence lvl that I know have. I dont know if this will help you any but that is my inpute on it-------------- the true test of quality steel is only measured in the heat of batle. Proverbs of the Dier Wolf <howl> |

Menace I disagree, yes at 1st, he will and hsould see improvemnts, but if he is skinny, he will remain skinner, cause martail arts isn't about "strength" as in weight room strength. Yes many martial artists are strong however, they probbaly hit the weight room as well.
If he wants to gain mass, as in body building looking big mass, he ned to workout and consume more calories, to build that muscle. Him being more active will just burn more calories, and make him need to eat more than he already is just to maintain his weight, whatever it be. -------------- GO into battle as if was your last, cause thats the only one you loose! |

andrew...i am pretty sure he doesn't want to become a bodybuilder...so he had moderate goals to begin with...so martial arts is ok to slightly bulk up..but like i said it's gonna be a lot slower than body building to get that mass....also i somewhat disagree with what you said about being active...our bodies are very ingenious...so when we increase intensity ...be it cardio or weight lifting...our bodies respond by having us have a greater appetite to maintain our bodyweight...just because he suddenly will be more active doesn't mean he will stay skinny...he may become leaner...by shedding fat...but muscle wise...probably not...and will overall still gain weight I would bet by doing all those push ups, sit ups, and pullups and so on...

He needs to eat not be more active, bruning calories is burning calories, yes his body will want him to eat more, but he will have to eat more to maintain, and even more to gain weight. He may tone up, but muscle wise there won't be much gain, cause he is already working out. Peopel do gain some weight, however its only cause they have never lifted before. I can take anyone who has never worked out before in there life, and make them do push up, sits ups and pull ups 100 of each 3 times a week, and yes they will see results. SO I still say, eat and diet.
