Your best bet is to get a PT to show you how to properly do them and to watch you. If you can squat 275, you can probably deadlift enough to seriously hurt yourself if you do it wrong. The biggest things to remember are to not arch your back, don't stick your butt out, and drive your feet into the ground to lift. Start out with something light to get proper form - 150 should be pretty easy for you. Deadlifts work just about every muscle in your lower-mid body, but squats are your best bet for quads afaik. |

foz...feet about 6 inches apart...get down fairly low, grab bar at ur sides, as close to ur body as u can...with reverse grip(1 hand under, 1 over)...ur lower back should have an arch...to help u achieve this stick out ur chest as much forward as u can...there...u feel that?...hold that...this is how u should be throughout the whole set...first you do maybe 135, just 45s per side, and do maybe 2 reps per set with about 10 sets...focusing on form...you can also do variation of the movement, where the bar doesn't touch the floor, (romanian deadlifts)....also make sure to extend all the way at the top...stick out ur chest as much as u can, now clench ur butt...see that upright position...that's how u should be at the top of every single rep...also deadlifts work mostly your lower back(as well as back in general), hamstrings, and butt...hope this helps

I thought a romain deadlift was where it comes just below the knee? Back and legs straight?
YOu can have any leg stance you want.....6in or 3 feet it don't matter, everyone is different. No one( very few) have "perfect form. As long as you butt doesn'pop up before your back you ok. THis is how I deadlift.I use whats called a "natural hang" grip. That is stand with yoru arm to your sides, let them hang there naturally, bend at the knees and grab the bar, one hand over one under. Thats your grip.NOW stand up, and imagine pusing your feet threw the floor and stand up and back kinda. Keep your butt down as much as posible. Lean back, and return the bar to the floore. -------------- GO into battle as if was your last, cause thats the only one you loose! |

Fos do a search here and find a post in the powerlifting section by Rev8ball. He has the most thorough description I've seen here at FT. I've made great gains without injury following the form and technique he describes. -------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

In fact his description is in the stickied post entitled "Deadlift and why we do it" at the very top of the powerlifting board. Hope this helps.-------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

First off I would not say to stand with your feet 6 inches apart. All the professional deadlifters as well as all training manuals I have seen state to do them with feet set shoulder width apart. Stiff legged deadlifts are done with your feet close together but they target the hammies. Menace, maybe you ought to read your stuff before posting to make sure of its accuracy.-------------- LIFT HEAVY! BECOME STRONG, LIKE BULL! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Yeah mutt, that was the reason I posted too. i'm glad menace didn't suggest that feet be 6 feet apart.-------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

Mutt, I was merely suggesting one way to do it..in fact that's how i do my 'deadlifts'...they indeed look very much like stiff legged deadlifts...But yea most people use apprx shoulder width stance...but 6 inches is fine imo...I use that stance with slight/moderate bend in my knees, and pick the weight off the floor, relying more on my lower back, with hamstrings kicking in more during 3/4 of the way, until my back and butt take over again during the last quarter of the rep...i worked myself to 675 with straps with such form...so it works for me..but people are different and they should find what works best for them...didn't mean to start a controversy...heh

Iunderstand menace but what you are describing is not a deadlift. Not really sure what it is but a deadlift it is not. -------------- LIFT HEAVY! BECOME STRONG, LIKE BULL! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Wow!!!! With a 675 pound deadlift you're up in the world class of powerlifters. I'd love to see some pictures. Congratulations. -------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

charlie I got a poor picture of me doing 655
It's from 2-3 months ago, and my friend messed up(took 2 pics both of which were in a down phase)so I am only lifting it a few inches off the ground at that point...I'll ask my friend to come perhaps in like 2 work outs and take pic of me doing 675 again, or maybe 685...Next work out I am doing 600 for hopefully 5-6 reps...however, u can still notice my form, and that I use wraps around forarms and straps.. I used wraps because the straps dug into my skin...giving me rashes or dunno for better word how to call it... On a sidenote Mutt, yes it is 'deadlift' ...when u lift barr of the floor with ur hands...in upright position it's called a deadlift...there's no one form...just like people use sumo stance...I use close stance...it works for me what can I say

Ok Menace but this: but 6 inches is fine imo...I use that stance with slight/moderate bend in my knees, and pick the weight off the floor, relying more on my lower back, with hamstrings kicking in more during 3/4 of the way, until my back and butt take over again during the last quarter of the rep: is not a deadlift. Standing with your knees slightly bet is not a deadlift. When i do them i squat till my ankles almost touch the back of my thighs. I just call em like I see em!-------------- LIFT HEAVY! You might be able to give Ronnie Coleman a run for his money. You have a fraction of his muscle but can hang with him...not bad!

I'd also agree, that's not a conventional deadlift form...that looks like a straight leg deaflift you are setting up for, or a good morning even sorta kinda lol, since your knees are slightly bent.
I'd be stunned to see a video of you actually deadlifting that 675 weight in that type of form dude. Hook us up! SHOCK US ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

firehawk, I will go for it in about a month, perhaps I could get my friend to come up next time...But yes this is how I do it....
here's a couple crazy pix my friend took of me at work with out my shirt flexing...now tell me how many steroids I am taking...it looks hilarious...my friends were sayign how crazy my traps looked...there's another pic where my vein popped up right down the middle of my forehead...scared myself a lil when i saw that... http://www.airness23.com/misc/Gym%20&%20Sports%20Related/Leo%20front17%20(11-6-04).jpg http://www.airness23.com/misc/Gym%20&%20Sports%20Related/Leo%20front18%20(11-6-04).jpg

my next goal for deadlift is 600 for 5-6 reps...then 675-685..hopefully it will go up smoother next time...hope the speed training helped me a bit...
| |
2004/11/06, 08:03 PM
Btw...ronnie coleman does 800 for 2 reps...which is about 850...and probably mroe now, cuz that was a couple years ago...
Most weight lifted ever was by this strongman of 973 lb(this was most recent i heard )....although at a powerlifting competition it was 933lb...so 675 is not that impressive....tho those guys outweight me by a good 100 pounds prolly when they do those numbers...
2004/11/06, 08:48 PM
600 x 6 reps would be a 771 1 rep max. I'd love to see a video of you doing 600 lbs. I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around a 205 pounder deadlifting 600 pounds and not being ranked in competition somewhere. You must have the genes of superman. I'm impressed.-------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

charlie apprxations are not that exact or that crazy lol...no way is it 771...last time i checked 600 for 5 was 675....and I am weird...like I did bench press 225 for 22-23 reps...275 for 12 ...while only doing 315 for like 5 reps...no idea why...I use different training methods for different body parts...so that's why i am different at different rep ranges i assume...i use powerlifting methods for back(prolly reason I do less for higher rep sets in ratio to my max...), and endurance/strength for bench/squat...etc....although I am swithcing it up now....
last tiem I curled 65s for only 10 reps( loss of 3 reps) but did 75s for 6 reps(improvement of 2 from previous work out) so I am weird with my improvements)...and I did them usign good form...fixed elbows, and DB went as far back as I could get it...and i didn't use back or shoulders...or maybe just barely...think I have to have some1 knowledgeable watch me to be 100% sure...anywayz... u guys are free to coem to my gyms and I'll show u my 675 deadlift...Yes my form is weird...but it works for me...Now if only I could improve my grip...heh
2004/11/07, 12:45 AM
Menace, I used the FT calculator for 1 rep max. Most here tell me it calculates low.In the challanges we've had here everybody but me uses a true 1 rep max because they say the FT calculator short changes them. I use 1 rep max calculator myself because I work out at home with no spotter.
You are the man. I probably can't travel to your gym but with a 675 lb deadlift why don't you just pick the gym up and bring it to me? -------------- I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol Charlie

With your age, your size, and the weight you say you can put up man, you have GOT to expect alot of skepticism.
Please, oh PLEASE, post some videos. I would love to see you deadlift 675 with the form that you showed in the picture above. |

Well I looked at you doing the susposed 675 lift. One the weight is on the floor, two the stance you are in is not a traditional deadlift, it is a stifflegged deadlift and frankly would not count in a powerlifting comp as a deadlift at all.-------------- LIFT HEAVY! Andrew...heavyweight/super heavy weight bodybuilders bodybuilders curl 100s for many reps..ronnie coleman for one...and many many more..what's that guy from the 1970s...6'5..competed with arnold..forget his name..anywho he curled 150s...as far I heard..
My friend was in a fairly dark gym...so he had to use professional flash that takes several seconds to load usign his SLR or those big cameras...i wasn't gonna hold the weight at the top while he tried to reload the flash and shoot it again.... Mutt...in a competition...minus the straps...why would it not count? as long as the weight comes up in a straight motion...and i don't swing the weight...and my back is fully extended and am perfectly straight...why would it not count? sumo style looks pretty weird imo yet people use it and it counts... listen my 250 lb friend who is also 6'0 'introduced' me to real deadlifting 2 years ago...before then most I did was 315 1 rep and stopped because 2 trainers pointed out my horrible form(back rounded and weight swinging)...He could not do 405 after he pyramided to it and tried 2-3 times...I came to the bar jokingly at first...thinking I couldn't even lift it and lifted it with ease with perfect form, cuz i asked my friend who competed in powerlifting whether that was good form and he said it was...then put on 50 more and did that too...455...before that i was doing lower back machine extensions for 200(stack) for 25 reps(my max at that tiem)...back then i was like 185-190lb...so what..i naturally have a very strong back...my form is weird because I rely on my back much more than most people...so what?...I don't know how u expect me to take a video..it's not like it's in my backyard...I am not ronnie coleman..why would i? looked pretty stupid when my friend took the pic with the flash that was hella bright...didn't make others too happy...

Some digital cameras have a capability to record short videos. Or, if you know anyone with a camcorder, you could get a video that way.
I don't think anyone is going to believe you around here until you prove it, and you dont' prove it by taking a picture of 675 lbs sitting on the floor with your hands on the bar. You are half the size of any of those people that can lift 675 and up or curl 100s for reps. It's simply amazing, but you need to expect skepticism until you can prove it. |
