I have been losing weight steadily for a year now since the birth of my baby last October. I've lost 53 pounds and have gained some nice muscle in the process. I started weight training and doing cardio 6 weeks after having my baby and have been eating 90% clean most of the time. I have been "stuck" at the same weight now, give or take 3-4 pounds, since August and I can't seem to break this plateau. The past few weeks I upped my weight training and added more cardio and did 2 hours a day 5 days a week. Still no budge on the scale. So I looked at my eating and I'm eating enough and eating good whole foods, whole wheat, etc. The only thing I've noticed changing the past few weeks with the increased exercise is my muscles are more noticeable. But I haven't lost inches yet or weight. Help!!!

Hi akfit, most of the time when what you're doing stops working , you need to try somthing else. Cardio is for as the name implies , your heart. It will not make your body much harder than it is. How long have you been weight training? Are you lifting as heavily as you can and regularly increasing the weight? 2 hours a day of cardio is way too much unless you are training for a cardio event.

Have you looked at the FT programs? There are many different workout goals you can set as well as diet guidelines to make them work. Most folks serious about training eat 1 cheat meal per week and eat very cleanly the rest of the week. That would be much cleaner than 90%. Change up in your exercise routine is very important as well as strict tracking of your diet. Most people new to training actually eat too little!!! That will cause the plateau you speak of.

A little research and a lot of perciverance will probably get you off the plateau. Try to eat 5 or 6 smaller meals per day to boost your metabolism. Congratulations on the decision to change your lifestyle. Stick to it. Welcome here.

I have definately noticed that I must fool my body about once a week or so by eating more calories than I normally would allow myself, it seems to keep it guessing (I'm talking in the third person about my body, well, most times I feel like it I am three people rolled into one!) anyway, I use the 5-6 meals a day, too, and that has helped me tremendously as does eating the right amount of calories, for if you don't get enough your body likes to react by keeping you at a stand still. Anyway, as Charlie said, there are many ways to get around those plateau's it is just many times we just give in to them, (I know because I am guilty of this!) rather than have to run around trying to figure out a way to beat it! I'm sure you can do it!!! Good luck to you!

Thank you both for your replies. I started weight lifting in 2001 and did it 2-3 times a week until I got pregnant in 2003. I then stopped, gained a lot of weight during pregnancy and 6 weeks after I had my baby I started back up. It has been a year now. I still can only lift 8 pound weights so far. I'm shaking at the 12-15th rep. So I never increased up to 10 pounds because of that. LOL. I came from 1 pound up to 8 this year.

Some of my friends looked at my journals and thought I was starving myself. I thought I was eating a lot but they said no. So this week I've been eating more and I feel so bloated and fat. We will see how this turns out in a few weeks. I had hoped to get to 130 by Christmas, but that may be too much in so short a time.

I will try the 5-6 meals a day and see if that helps me. I'm losing my motivation to keep going because of this plateau and I know I surely can't be the only one that has ever gone through this. But I won't give up because I didn't work this hard to not make it to my goal.

Try out HIIT cardio instead of standard cardio for a while and see if that makes a difference.

You may want to up your calorie count for a week or so to boost your metabolism.

What's your diet/weight routine look like? If you're going to 15 reps, you're using too light a weight.
