Sacrifice Muscle?

After reading a number of posts I am getting the idea that weighloss and muscle gain are pretty much incompatable. I am 212lbs and by the calculation on this site 26% bodyfat :( I am 15 months away from my 40th birthday and want to be in the best shape ever. I guess my question is do I sacrifice muscle and concentrate on losing the fat and when I reach my goal, work on the muscle building? From what I understand, as you age it becomes more difficult to build muscle so I am concerned about losing much. Not that I am really muscular but have some. If I go this route would the workouts be heavy on aerobics and light on weights with higher reps?

P.S. bbfit, you should write a book on all your insights and put them into one place. I enjoy reading your posts and have learned from them but it can be confusing reading them broken up between posts.:big_smile:

There is no need for you to lose muscle to lose fat. Increase your protein intake for starters, this will insure retaining lean tissue. If you se up a caloric deficit correctly with the right macros, (p/c/f), you should retain most of your lean tissue and lose mostly fat. And you can gain muscle at any age. Never say you can't! This is the wrong word.

By the way, where are you at in that picture? Looks like you were doing some mountain hiking? I love that stuff, we just came back from Colorado. My favorite place.

I was in the San Gorgonio Wilderness on a three day backpacking trip. It is located in Southern California in the San Bernardino Mountain Range. Unfortunately most of the wilderness around here is closed now due to extreme fire danger.

What is the right ratios of p/c/f and how do I determine the right calorie defict without going to low. Also, as in my previous post I have to workout early in the morning but want to get the right nutrition. I also realize I should do weights one day and aerobics on another if I have that right.
