I recently started weight training with an intention of gaining lean mass and am still a beginer. After reading a lot of articles and threads off this site and others, decided to try whey protein and MRPs and have been taking both for a while. Looks like the arms are shaping up and I gained about 5 lbs. However, I feel I am getting flab around belly and waist.
I am training atleast twice a week. Do a little cardio each time as well. Doing ab crunches almost daily. What am I doing wrong? Why am i getting this flab?
Any help would much appreciated.

This may sound weird, but if you do alot of abbs, your stomach will appear bigger. That is if you build 1in. of muscle under 2in. of fat, its gonna make that fat stick out another inch.

I wouldn't train abbs everyday 3 times a week at most, preferrible 2 times a week. IF you want nice abbs your gonn ahave to "get rid" of the fat for the tummy to get smaller. hope this helps

Thanks. How do I get rid of fat around tummy. I thought daily crunches would do that, but in my case, it turned out otherwise.

The only way to tap into your fat stores is with a caloric deficit. This means you have to expend more calories than you intake. A very slow rate is optimal, 1-2 lb. per week is great. Take a look at your diet, cut any processed pre packaged foods. These are normally calorie laden and also contain many additives like hydrogenated oils, which are of course less than optimal to the fat fight.

You may think about increasing your weight bearing workouts, as a caloric deficit can and will happen not only from cutting calories, but from an extra energy expenditure. Try splitting up your workouts to a 4 day split for instance.

Thanks bb1fit. I started weight training to gain weight and tone. I am 149lb. To gain mass, ft program suggests about 2300 cal/day in-take and mine is about 1500 cal/day right now. That is with MPR once a day. If I expense calories, am I defeating my orgianl goal? This is kinda chicken-in-egg situation. HELP. How do I balance this.

datafront,

You definitely need to up your calorie intake. I'd suggest taking a look at the "Grocer list for a bodybuilder" post under "Specific Diets...". I've probably given this same advice 10 times today, however it is a great list to go off of for diet :). Also, as advised you will want to increase your expenditure by working out more than 2 days per week. A 4 day split would be optimal for you. If you do a search for "bb1fit" (you can pay me later) under fitbuddy, you'll find a lot of good resources to help your training and diet.
