Awesome post, GG! That post deserves a sticky.

The handwraps are IMPORTANT! Ugly, sore knuckles are the result of no handwraps.

I have a 100 pound punching bag and I hit it, duh, but Im not really sure how to go about turning it into a good workout. Also, is it true that the punching bag aids in building arms and chest muscle?

I don't know, I usually just use my ex-husband and he probably weighs, oh 'bout 200. I only use this workout occaisionally because used to often you lose the element of surprise. I don't think any of us wants that.

this should help you:

http://www.stumptuous.com/heavybag.html

i didn't really read anything but the title and the 'happy punching' at the bottom of the page, but according to my 8-ball, this looks like a decent start... anyhoo, i googled 'punch bag routine' and that was the first result... but if you need more info, you could aways do a more thorough google search while gg writes you back... heh...

Their really isnt a way to show somehow to hit a heavy bag, Each person has their own style, However the heavy bag is intended to be hit and be hit hard...It builds power and packs pep in your punches...On the heavy bag you want to box it like you box a human being, You want to move around it with footwork stand and trade with it and so forth....I love getting my bag swaying back and forth and just boxing circles around it, bobbing and weaving and everything else...Amazing stuff....But just dont go crazy on it for about 20 minutes break it up into intervals like this

3 minutes rounds

heavy bag
30 second pushups
jump rope
30 second pushups
shadowbox
30 second pushups

That is just an example, You dont want to make it continous, You want to break it down into "Rounds"

I personally feel anyone wanting to lose weight or tone up should acquire those exercises, They are great for cardio!

I dont see how punching a bag would build muscles into the chest, Your chest isnt being used...If you are hitting it correctly you should be punching with lateral movements working your back/shoulders/arms, Nothing else...Hitting a bag wont get you big and buff if that is what you are looking for, It is for power pretty much...

Also, I cant stress this enough when using a heavy bag PLEASE USE GLOVES AND HANDWRAPS, If you dont mind your tendons being broken EASILY sure go ahead and dont use protection, But gloves are not enough YOU NEED WRAPS!!!!!!!!

Their is an excellent video of how to work the speed bag.

So watch it and I hope you learn something :)

Im going on vacation this week and wont be back until next sunday, but when I come back I have put together a video (short only about a minute or two) of some of the training techniques, I do and will pm or post the link to anyone who wishes to learn a thing or two about a thing or two....

I hope this helps and if ANYBODY needs any help with any form of the "sweet science" Feel free to pm or email me anytime...ALWAYS willing to help, to those who will listen!:dumbbell:
