What ever happened to proper spelling? Is it just me or is there anyone else scratching their heads while reading posts on any bulletin board these days. Just needed to vent a bit of frustration.

Face it you're OLD ; )
Really, the way some of these kids write (and it pains me to use the word kids for 20 somethings, makes me feel so damned old) I have to wonder just where our society at a whole will be when they are our age. THEN I remember.....my parents thought the same thing about me and my generation.
Lost art? Probably, then again with all the slang we use compared to our parents it was lost way before now. :(

On this board the problem often isn't even the slang. Seems like many people are just too lazy to take 10 seconds and proofread their entry.

I have to say that from a linguistic standpoint any language is the culmination of slang words which slowly become part of the "official" and "standard" usage. Look at the Oxford English Dictionary, it's interesting to see the evolution of words.
I am not one for numbers used as letters though. I just don't like the way that it looks. As far as poor spelling, blame spell check. When you are used to writing in Microsoft Word that can autocorrect everything for you, you don't want to bother checking things by hand. In the defense of some, you can tell people try to sound it out as they type. The hooked on phonics just isn't working so well for them :)

The fact of the matter is that Phonics screws everything up!! I was a great speller up to 3rd grade when they started integrating phonics, and after that it was all downhill. Luckily my love of reading saved my spelling, but seriously..telling an 8 year old that phish is really fish...what are they thinking!

C'mon people, we are a generation in need of spell check everywhere we are forced to type something.

LOL Charlie!
For them it's shortening the English language, for me it's like trying to read a foreign language I have no idea how to read. Takes me forever to get through a post sometimes lol
