ok, i have been using freetrainers for awhile, and i have seen a big difference in muscle tone due to the excellent workout routines, but i have been having a lot of trouble with seeing any change in my body fat. i know that i should probably do more cardio, but i also get the feeling that my diet needs to be adjusted, so i figured i would pay for a few sessions with a personal trainer. thing is, i have no idea how much they should cost. any one have a ballpark figure?

On an average you can look at around $40.00hr. Some might be cheaper or more expensive than others. Good Luck!

You can get it for free right here. There are a lot of meal ideas that will help you. Use the nutritional plan here on the site to get a rough idea on # of calories. Then visit the Specific Diet forum and buy everything that is on the post: Grocery list for a bodybuilder. Many people have posted there meals for a day. this place has been great, like i said, and i will stick around, but i have tried the nutritional tool, and kept within the parameters, and nothing happened (other than me getting very frusterated). so i just thought i'd see if a face to face would help. |

buyer beware with personal trainers.. be sure to check credentials and knowledge in the areas you are concerned about (nutrition in your case).
And sorry to say I think $40 an hour is on the low end. Top quality trainers usually are more than that.. $60 even $80 per hour. (keep in mind they usually only work a few hours a day - these aren't 9-5 jobs). |

Could you be more specific?? Remember the nutritional tool is just guidelines. Did you adjust your calories downward to create a caloric deficit? You can still get a lot of help here. Most of the mods and many members are presonal trainers.

the calories are the hardest part for me to keep up when i am within the guidlines actually. :) i get most of my protein though shakes because i am a vegetarian (i eat fish but not often), so they don't usually have a lot of calories. i do sometimes go over on the fat because i am taking flax seed oil everyday. and my carbs are also usually below the recommended amount. i have posted my dilemma under the nutrition forum- maybe someone can help me there. :)
i do want to acccurately find out my bodyfat composition at least, if i don't go to a trainer how can i do this? |

i do count them- i'm just saying they are usually lower than what is recommended. for eg- yesterday i ate 1636 calories and i'm supposed to be eating 2065.

What do you average? Eat a staticamount for 2 weeks. If your weight stays even. Lower it by 250 cals per day for a week. Once you create a caloric deficit you will lose the weight. Its very important to maintain a proper p/f/c ratio-------------- Waterskis with buffalos Charlie | |

you should call up some of your local chiropractors and see if they have a fitness center and there cheap to and there never crowded and they have personal trainers to. (well the one i go to does) its really cheap to its only like 25 dollars a month and you get the services of 2 personal trainners days a week and since theres no one there like the most thats been there at one time with me in 3 other people. You get to work more one on one with them you should call around and check it out. It cheap and they know what there doing

the top of the line for trainers work for no less than $100 per session, some of the best in the world work for $200 or even $300 per session. Why so much, it's like going to a orthopedic specialist instead of your general practitioner. they'll do a better job in alot less time since they have the education and tools necessary to provide a service for that much.
now i'm not saying you need to spend that much. if you want a great nuts and bolts book on nutrition read "the metabolic typing diet book" by trisha fahey (?) and bob wollcott. it's a great start. dave |

the oe i've looked into so far is $65 canadaian- that's about $50 us, so it's good to know they aren't crazy expensive. i'm going to looka round a bit before i commit though. and i will look for that book- i think my metabolism is a bit different than normal. it stays fairly consistent, which is nice, but if i do put on weight- it's almost impossible to lose it seems. :) |

I personally recommend utilizing a personal trainer. When I got back into exercise last November I got a trainer. I learned to use proper technique and developed good training habits. If I had started on my own I probably would have become frustrated and not pushed myself quite as hard. Nothing against the programs offered through this site, I just think that a trained professional can create a better routine than one created for the masses. For me it was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone.

I think that personal trainers are a good thing to have, but if you can research into workouts and training and good technique and how to use your workouts effectively and to the maximum potential you do not need a personal trainer and YOU are your personal trainer.
As far as prices go - personal trainers determine their own fees as they are self-employed essentially. Expect vary different prices, and using Yellow Pages or something else local, look around and see for yourself the prices available. I would say though that it would be also really worthwhile if you want to monitor your diet, a nutritionist is also an option, again costing similar, but again I think the important thing is if you can obtain the knowledge which is needed, then your money can be much better spent on books and equipment rather than sessions, although only if you feel comfortable that you know how to train effectively and to the standard you want (unless you happen to earn a lot and can afford a trainer!)
