Standing calf raises on a wooden block are what work for me. Go heavy, but keep your reps in the moderate to high range. Your calves will respond to heavier multiple reps better.

Some people walk around on their tip-toes around the house. A little extreme for me, but people get great results from this. I prefer a combo of standing and donkey raises. They stress a little different part of the muscle. I agree with jbennett about the rep ranges.

Standing calf raises, sitting calf raises and donkey raises are my bread and butter. I stress the highest weight possible with moderate to high reps. Changing foot position also helps me. Best of luck -sweeny (bodybuilder & athlete)

Try doing single calf raises...stand on a step holding a dumbell..slowly raise up and down. Really concentrate on your form. Also...when doing standing calf raises... do 10 reps with your feet slightly pointed out, 10 with them slightly pointed in, and then 10 with a regular stance continuously. That 30 is one set. Three sets is enough. My boyfriend does this..and says it works.

I have a seated leg press. I like to use this because I can handle more weight than on the traditional seated or standing calf machine. 3-4 sets really heavy and I'm good to go.
