Well it has been a while since I have posted a good post here so I thought I would give it a try. I know a lot of you are newer members and that is a very good thing. I am not a expert on nutrition like BB is. Nor am I a total guru on strength training like Gator is. But I have taken a formerly very un athletic, very weak boy and turned him into a rather strong person. I continually surprise not only coworkers and friends with my strength, and size, but I do tht to myself, the one that should know me the best. Weightlifting is not all about the weight you lift, but on how you lift it. A person that lifts 25lbs and is total spent after doing that set worked just as hard as someone lifting 100 at the same exercise. In fact my respect goes to the one that lifts lower weight but with perfect form over someon that throws 200 around but has bad form. I read this once and can not remeber where, that no other sport is such a total indivudal sport. The only one that can fail you is you, and weightlifting is even more unique in that you HAVE to fail in order to get better. I can not tell you the amount of times I failed at a lift and weight goal. But rather then reacting badly it just made me want to lift again. I had a time reaching a 400lb deadlift, but once I hit it I realized that my goal of 600 was not unreachable in time. You need to make small goals to reach that big one. Do not let others tell you you can not do that. I find that even though my wife and family knows that I lift they do not understand why I lift. I do not lift for them, or to get a six pac. I do not lift to impress others, or to make women want me. I lift for the lfit. i want that weight pressing on my shoulders, Iwant that scrape to draw blood as i deadlift. Iwant that smell and taste of iron in my mouth. I live to walk thru that cloud of chalk as I get ready to lift. The benefits of this is obvious, healt looking good etc. But the best benefit is the personal well being of acheiving that lift or that rep or what ever you goal is. Keep at it, this is not something that happens over night. 90% of all people that start a workout plan quit. That is right 9 out of 10 people quit after starting. So if you are one that is still lifting you are indeed a cut above the rest.

I am in the same boat as you Mutt(sort of). I use to lift to impress the girls when I was going through a divorce. Now I am happily married and took a couple of years off when I met my wife and now I lift cause I want to for the reasons you stated above. I LOVE the feeling I get now when I accomplish my goals(smilin ear to ear). It is much more motiviating and rewarding when you lift for yourself and not others. GOOD LUCK ON THE 600!!

Thanks, Mutt, it has been a difficult week for me and your post inspired me when I, personally, really needed it. I don't want to be in the 90% that quit, I want to succeed, but sometimes it is like everything in your day for days is doing everything to prevent it. I know I've only been doing weight training for about five-six weeks now, but that feeling you and livers20 speak of, that accomplishment, is a wonderful feeling. Good luck to you both!

I love how you said it 7707mutt. I don't think anyone ever said it better. And the feeling is mutual. I can't totally quit from the habit because it's ingrained and I love it. Wish you much luck on the 600. It's nice to know there are a lot of people I can look up to, seriously.
On the other hand..I now have only 3 compliments left for today, anyone else needing a boost?
