Hello,

I just found out, I'm pregnant and have some exercise questions. I've had a routine of 30 min of elliptical and 30 min of free weights three times a week for almost two years now and I need to know if I can continue with the same routine now that I'm pregnant.
I've heard weight training is fine to do just as long as I'm not laying flat on my back floor. I'm the kind of person that needs to know exactly what I can and can't do. Is it ok if I break a serious sweat on the elliptical machine? Can I weight train using an incline?
I would totally appreciate and feel better about taking care of the baby if I just new some yes and no's. I'm very anal about keeping up with my work out. I had to quit smoking too so I'm really worried about becoming a big fat toad, which I know I'm totally capable of.

First, congratulations!

You should probably talk to your doctor before you continue your routine...there is no reason you can't exercise and weight train during pregnancy, but there are heart rates you need to avoid and the lower half of your muscles will be doing lots of different things to prepare your body for childbirth, so, you wanna be careful not to overdo it.

Find out what you need to avoid and modify your routine to accommidate them.

Best of luck,

Congratulations!

I'd do what Julienne suggested and check with your dr. You'll still be able to exercise, but you'll need to make modifications. Best of luck!!

Hi! Congratulations!!!

As long as you aren't at risk for any complications, you can continue your current level of exercise - just don't increase the duration or intensity.
You don't have to avoid lying on your back until the second or third trimester, when there is a risk of the weight of the fetus pressing on your main artery.

Be careful when stretching - your joints and ligaments loosen up when you are pregnant and it is easy to overstretch and pull something - no fun!

You may have to slow down a bit in your third trimester, see how it goes.

Stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothing!

In a previous post someone pasted in the recommendations for exercise during pregnancy - i will find it and bump it ofr you, look for it, maybe in the women's forum.
