Since I am new to all this, I was hoping someone else could answer this question. I recently joined a gym and got a trainer (I'm lame, and have no experience, I know) and he put me on the normal 'chicken 3 times a day with protein powder in everything' diet (not exactly but close enough). I know I haven't been following the diet exactly...but it's better than what I was previously eating. Here's the question. I seem to be GAINING weight. Specifically in the waist area (as in pants seem much tighter than normal). I was wondering if that's because I started working out and the muscles are just developing below the fat....or is it something else that I should watch out for.... and lastly is there any way to curb this or possible stop it altogether? I know this is a dumb question but a response (other than 'moron') would be much appreciated.

I don't think you are a moron or you are lame. Everyone started out just the way you did and theres nothing to be embarssed about!!!! I think you are probably gaining some muscle under the fat. Try following the diet more closely and train hard and everything will even out. A more detailed list of your diet will certainly help too. Anyway good luck:):dumbbell:

Your previous eating habits could have something to do with it too. If your metabolism is slow at the moment (due to things like inactivity, caloric restriction, skipping breakfast, etc etc), actually eating the way you're "supposed" to might make you gain until your metabolism stabalizes.

if you got a whey protein that is a pure concentrate, sometimes this can cause a lot of bloating in the abdominal area. it can also cause *ahem* gas. if this is it you might want to consider switching to a protein with a higher percentage of whey isolate.

have you noticed an increase in pounds or just a difference in the way your clothes are fitting?

xena is also right in that if your metabolism has slowed too much, you're going to have to get it back up to speed. stick with the diet and be patient and your results will come:big_smile:
