I am a 24 year old female who needs some advice for dropping an extra 10-15 pounds. I am not overweight, but I would like to lose some extra pounds and get toned up. I've started going to the gym, and need some input on whether this is a good routine or not. I go 4-5 times a week. While I am there, I do 45 minutes of cardio (typically on the treadmill) then 15 minutes of abs, and then lift (arms one day, legs the next for 30 minutes). Do I need to break these things up? Is too much cardio a bad thing if I want to lose weight quickly? I know diet plays a key role in weight loss too, and I am watching what I eat more. Any advice on dropping some extra pounds would be appreciated!!! Thanks

bbelle, you should be doing your weight training before the cardio, or break them up completely if you can.

Focus on getting toned up, once you build a bit of muscle it will make your body more efficient at burning calories.

For cardio, go for quality vs. quantity. Do a fitBuddy search on HIIT (high intensity interval training) to better understand the benefits of concentrating your cardio into a powerpacked 15-20 minute session.

Ultimately you need to track everything you eat and keep your calorie intake at the right level for your size and goals, and turn your body into a better fat-burner..

the best thing to do is, for example:

weights mon, wed, fri.
cardio tues, thur, sat.
rest on sunday

I try and keep my weight workouts around 1 hour. This is what has worked for me.

Of course that is only part of the equation, as datanigirl stated. You need to have healthy water and food intake.

Good Luck! :)
