Well, being as both my parents are doctors, they repeatedly tell me I am stunting my growth by lifting. I turned thirteen on the fifteenth of february, but as of right now I am at the maturity level (Both physically and mentally) of a fifteen year old. Easily. Well, at the beginning of the seventh grade, I was possibly one of the tallest kids in the grade. Now that I go more and more frequently to lift, and have enough testosterone to actually build muscle and seriously change the way I look, I've noticed that many of the kids are as tall, and if not taller than I am. My brother who I lift with was doing the weights I do currently when he was a late freshman. He's sixteen now, and 6'1. I'm about 5'7".
I always try to get atleast 12 reps on any sort of set I do, and I've never maxed out on anything. I've been lifting seriously for 6.. or 7 months now. I am really happy with myself.. its wonderful. Pure confidence builder, heh. I was just curious if anyone on this board knew any real information on this subject. Like I said, I do the whole "low weight" high rep thing, I guess. Benching I stick to a max fourth set of 115 and always get atleast 12 reps. |

the spine is made of lots of bones stuck together with these spongy discs inbetween yeh... and when I wake up I'm 5' 11 and when I go to bed I'm 5' 9 1/2''.. This is normal same as I'm 178 pounds at night and 172 in the morning(water loss)...
Yeh I suppose there is a case for weights 'stunting' height maybe by a couple of inches. But theres a case for cigarettes 'stunting', causing cancer, killing you. What would your parents prefer you to be short, gorgeously muscled or dead. Okay I know my arguments a bit childish but I'd rather be an inch shorter with fat arms and a skinny waist. |

You shouldn't be concerned with how you compare to others.. if you were exceptionally tall in 7th grade, then the other kids are finally getting their 'growth spurts' and catching up to you.. you're probably not shorter, they're just taller!!
Exercise is great for ALL ages, I am surprised that your parents would discourage it, ask them to research 'resistance training' before passing judgment. They may have a negative perception of the 'weight lifting' from some hyped images that have portrayed the sport in the past. |

I don't think they necessarily discourage it, but I do think they are a little out of date (being about 50 56), and don't realize that it's very well possible for a thirteen year-old to be biologically as mature as say, a fifteen year old or what not.
Mainly they don't know anything about weight training. My mom usually says "Don't hurt yourself" or "Richard should he be doing this?!" Or what not when my brother and I walk out the door. Thanks for the responses, and I must agree with you Neil :). I'd rather be a few inches shorter and be stronger. Plus I hear you look more buff if you're shorter.. less space for your muscle to amass in. Off topic: Datdanigirl: You must realize that in a world based on magazines, and sadly, MTV, it's very hard not to compare yourself to others. I know a few girls who have slit their wrists, and are already openly bolemic. They are in eigth grade. Not even fourteen yet. |

some of the best and most symmetrical bodies have been short- more so in the old school male bodybuilders. Some of the classiest lookers have been short- When I say short I mean 5' 8'' or less. Small feet are nicer than big feet.
Size is genetic and also at your age it's about puberty. I was always the tallest pre-puberty. I think I was always 5' 11''from about 11 years. Good for Basketball. Now I'm 39 and 5' 9'' and I don't know where or when the 2'' went??? At your age you need any amount of exercise you fancy and good food. |

ur 5'7" at 13? lol, no worries m8. Youve got 5yrs to go to grow 2inches to at least be average height :) Im 5'6" and weights has nothing to do with it ;)
I read that lifting doesnt necesarily stunt growth. Its when lifting really heavy..like powerlifting where you can damage something that will result in stunt of growth. |

Porphyria, believe me I realize those things all too well.. my daughter is in eighth grade and has at least one friend with every horror story out there, slit wrists and all. I've had to hold her best friend who ran away with someone she met at McDonalds and hear what happened in the 3 days before she came to my house because she was too scared to go home.. it's not easy I know.
All I was trying to say is that everyone grows at different rates and just because you're not taller than everyone anymore that doesn't mean you're getting shorter. My husband was 5'7" in high school and grew to 6'4" when he turned 18.. his brother was 5'8" in high school and still is! Hellscream is right on..here are a few links I found on the subject: :dumbbell: http://bodybuilding.about.com/cs/beginnerbasics/l/blstuntedgrowth.htm :dumbbell: http://www.efit.com/servlet/article/3392.html :dumbbell: http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/jul2000/965096380.An.r.html Now.. don't give in to all that peer pressure and stand up straight! i am 17 and have been lifting since 13. i am 5'10". i live in a tall family but i am the shortest. and i am the only one that lifts. i'm not saying that lifting stunts growth but it is possible. i believe you should start lifting weights around 14/15 when your skeletal structure is mostly hardened and matured.-------------- I cut down trees I eat my lunch I go to the la-va-tree On Wednesdays I go shopping, and have buttered scones for tea. |

First of it's not uncommon to have a wide disparity in terms of height among family members...especially among brothers/sisters...this doesn't necessarily prove anything...
Also lifting weight is not 'recommended' at least until you hit 14....although public opinion is changing on this....you sound fairly mature for your age...so have someone knowledgeable at the gym put together a good program for you with free weights/cables....My suggestion is not to go overly heavy on certain lifts like squats although there's no evidence it stunts your growth... reps of 12 is too much...good sets for bodybuilding is 6-8...that's most you can do with a given weight in powerlifting/olympic lifting you tend to lift with 1-5 range of reps.... Also if you are tall now....among your classmates...you may still end up being fairly short...I had a friend who was taller than me in 6-8th grade...although he was left back a year...he was 5'7 by the end of 8th grade....he's still 5'7....I am now 6'0...and I got most of my growth spurt at around 14-16....but this ofcourse is just a personal example it in no way proves anything lol... Anywayz....tell your mom and dad to relax...lift moderate weight...use good form(have someone knowledgeable show/observe you...sometimes you 'think' you are using good form..but it's far from...) gl |
