I think weight training is an enjoyable way of gaining strength and building muscle. The rule of lifting heavier and heavier, seems to be the best and only way to get the most out of developing more strength/muscle--but would that make a better invitation for a hernia to be developed? What are the best precautions one should consider while lifting heavy to avoid hernias? Is using a weight belt for all exercises including leg press, barbell curls, and other similar exercises one of the best options/idea?

Use low weight and proper form till you get stronger. Then use the heavier weights.

No using a weight belt for everything is asking for a injury. Only use it for lifting on you max lifts...UNLESS you have a back injury. Like Mike said start light in the very light range learn good form then add weight!

Thank you guys for your advices..I'm trying to use perfect form, not going too heavy on my lifts. Last time I worked out,I got gutsy and tried to do a one rep-max deadlift with 225lbs, of course using a weight belt. I did one rep, and then took the weight down and did another, after that I did leg presses without the weight belt going all the way down--doing 5 reps of 300 pounds on my last two sets. After I finished, I felt guilty of trying to do too much with lifitng such a heavy weight as 225!! Doing the reverse barbell curl(80 pounds)using some momentun and no weight belt, that made me feel even guiltier. How about strengthening the midsction--would having a stronger core also help avoid a hernia?

Yup Train the abs lower back and just overall body strength. I go up to 455 on my barbell shrugs with no betl. I do bent over barbell rows up to 235 with out one and i do deadlifts to 335 with no belt, in fact have gone a lot higher with out one. It took me a long time to get to that level. Just keep going and you will be fine!

455lbs! I had no idea mutt, that is so cool. I haven't started weight training yet and the whole thing is just one giant mystery. I'm currently lifting 10lbs, wanna compare biceps? Seriously, I really didn't have any idea what you guys meant by "lift heavy" and while I know you aren't doing it to impress me, I am totally amazed.
