Hi everyone!!!! I am a huge nba and basketball fan. I not only like watching the sport, but i love playing it and i'm quite good. As i made the team for the 3 straight year i was wondering on any suggestions you guys can give me about exercises than can make my wrists and arms stronger for basketball. I am only 5'2 by the way and i am wondering what i should be doing to grow taller. I have heard many people saying that it's all in genetics, my dad is 6'2 and my grandfather is is 6'4. But i want to know weather i should be eating more protein or something to help me grow faster. What kind of foods should i be eating???? I also wanna learn about exercises to help me with my jump and flexebility. If you can please reply, thx a lot:)

Well since you are only 13, just eat a clean cut diet with plenty of nutrients, make sure your taking a daily mulitvitamin, and drink some milk. You cant do anything other than feed the plant, you cant change your genetics now, it's too late..what's done is done, you just have to grow into yourself now. Just don't get injured because that could stunt your growth..and you definitely don't want that. For exercise, just do some sprints jumping rope and lot's of quick feet drills and calistenics. Its hard for me to tell you to go out and start lifting, because sounds like you have a good foot to grow..and bad form on the exercises that increase verticle could stunt your growth. But if you can find someone who knows what they are doing...a grownup at the gym, that has something to their name..or even as far as a trainer, then i would feel comfortable telling you to lift weights. Hopefully some of this helps. Dont get to ambitious, you'll get there, you'll become stronger as you grow just naturally. -------------- If hard work and persistence were the keys to success, most people would opt to pick the lock.~Dick |

there are a ton of plyometric jump programs you could do. thats the best stuff you can do now probably for basketball.... worked opposite for me though, i got my 40 down to a 4.6 but vertical leap improved very little.

Plometric jump programs are programs to help your vertical jump. When i was in highschool my weightlifting classes would jump over 4 different sizes of boxes. It really helps. Jumproping really will help in skill training, your speed will improve greatly, as will your vertical which will help with rebounding. When you jumprope, do different exercises, like alternating feet (2-1-2), try to go as fast as you can, but barely lift your feet on the ground. Also, if you have access to a weight room, do squats, hang clean, those will help build leg muscle. I speak from experience, doing this will really help. Just don't injure yourself, and in a sport like basketball it is really easy..i had knee surgery last year and couldnt play ANY sports my senior year, it is almost may and i am just being able to run and lift again. BECAREFUL!

I think the best exercise you can do for basketball is basketball. Its skill which you can only learn from playing it.

Drills that you can do are 1. jumproping.Go as long as you can the first time, but also work on form and speed. Then, keep practicing..also, you can (on sidewalk, track, of gym floor) mark five spots (. . and do jumping excercises, alternat feet..run 100's, just simple speed and agililty things, and of course play basketball.

I played B-ball through High school (grayslake IL 93 - 95) We took state, had great trainers, let me share a few of the exercises we did. First, find your weakness, your 13, sounds like your saying your arms need some strength from what you said. Here is a small issue with that, but easly corrected. when you are St training, you will loose some accuracy (from my exp) so be sure to practice your shot a lot more! Also practicing your shot till your arms are tird is a great way to strengthen them, shoot 3 pointers till your blue in the face, or the rim falls off. Wrist curles are great for the wrist (hold a dumbell in your hand, palm up, and curl the weight, bending at the wrist, your elbow should not move) Military presses are great for your shoulder (a benchpress when sitting upright, like in a normal chair, you can use dumbells or a standard bar, or even a machine) Curls are great for your bicep, you need to have good and even arm strength or your shots will be off, due to some muscles fatiguing too soon. My new favorite Tricep exercise is the "skull crusher" cool stuff (lye on the bench, as if your going to do a standard benchpress, use the EZ bar, the curvy one, as if your in the up position of a benchpress, bend at the elbows bringing the weight to your forhead, keep it under controll, or you will find out why they call it a skull crusher lol) That should take care of your arms, there are MANY more exercises to do, but that is a good start! Your 6' something, that is good, proly will play forward or center to start, but by your senior year, depending on the size of your school your going to be a guard/forward (NBA guards tend to be 6' 5" ish if I recall correctly) Practice your dribble, 3 pointer, and in the paint constantly, do lay-ups habitualy, play a 1 on 1 when ever you can, even if the guy is just goign to tear you appart, learn learn learn, Basket ball is a simple sport... that takes perfection to succeed at. Don't do what I did, and just practice when your suposed to, and goof off otherwise! Dribble a ball to school! lol, be a basketball dork and you will play college ball, I can almost guarntee it! Good luck ioioio!

I am only 14 but a 6 inches taller. I went out and got some ankle wheights for 10 dollars. All i did was run and jump and play games. I coudl sugest for you to get a vertical leap to go out and get u some. Also play games that you know you can't win. They make you better. I sometimes have to play 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 in order to make me give the extar effort on my jumps for dunks (yes on 10 feet) and rebounds. Always do what these other guys are sayin.

He probably just hit his growth spurt. Don't worry. You'll hit your growth spurt soon.
My son is 12 1/2. A few of his classmates have hit their growth spurts and are at the 5'5" range, but there are plenty of others still under 5'. If you have the talent, your height will not be as much of an issue. Just relax and wait for your body to do it's thing. And drink milk and take an awesome multivitamin. -------------- I will never grow up, just old. Duct tape is like The Force. sounds like you have tall parents/grandparents so you will probably grow int your height...most kids outgrow their parents...so it depends....unless your mom is very short....you will probably get the most growth when you're 15-16...although some males can grow significantly even in 18-21 range....
Just focus on running, doing push ups(wide and close hand placement), pull ups, crunches, jumping under the backboard/rim and trying to explode as soon as you land (do like 5 jumps rest 1 min and repeat this 2-3 more times)....I would stay away from weights for now just so you don't affect your growth potential....just so that you give your body time to mature....I would wait to do weight lifting until you're 16-17years... |
