When your doing cardio exercise is it best to breathe normally or take in large amounts of air and let large amounts of air out?

You shouldn't be gasping. Breath normally, and if you breath in through your nose your throat won't dry out so much. If you try to take bigger breaths while you cool down or recover, that can be helpful, but too much deep breathing can make you a little dizzy.
-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight.

I've been told to take controled breath's, not "panting" shallow one's (at least for running) but nice controlled deep ones and to blow out all the carbon dioxide from the longs to help get more oxygen to the muscle and so better use the ATP. I'm not sure if this goes for only running or if it's the right thing to do, my father does it and he can smoke me on long distance runs and not even get winded. My 2 cents.:dumbbell:

And on a second note, like asimmer said, it is important to breath through the nose and out the mouth, though sometimes if your body needs extra oxygen you'll end up naturally taking some oxygen through the mouth and most through the nose.

Oh right thanks, I was told to over exaggerate my breathing, but I think that gets me even more out of breath.

I don't worry much about breathing while doing cardio. I definitely do gasp, though, as I'm running out of steam towards the end of HIIT, but that's really the point.
