I get up around 1:45am for work. The first thing I do is hit the elliptical machine for 30min. Then I usually have a pretty descent breakfast around 2:30-2:45am: 4 egg whites and a cup of spinach, orange juice and coffee. I get to work at 3:45am and begin working on my show (I direct the morning news). By the time we hit air (5am) I'm starving again. In fact when my show is over and the next director comes in for the second hour, I'm so hungary I feel sick.
I always bring oatmeal and fruit with me to have around 7-8am, but I'm so hungary when I'm finished at 6am I have to eat it then. I'm trying to eat every 3-4 hours and I always try to have enough protine and complex carbs to keep me filled up through the day. So my question is, why am getting so ravenously hungary literally 1 1/2-2 hours after I eat a descent breakfast? And should I honor that hungar and bring something with me to eat(like and apple or some other portable food) when I start to get those serious hunger pangs again, or just let it pass and give it the 3-4 hour time to eat again? |

Muscle needs to be fed. This is probably why you are getting hungry. I would not do what you do as far as your early morning regimine. I would have a protein drink, then do your elliptical. This for one will get you out of a catabolic state, rev your metabolism a bit, and fuel you for your cardio. Then have your breakfast, but you should add some complex carb(soluble fiber would be good), like a 1/2 cup of oats. This will help fill you and slow digestion, and you will feel more full. Never fear, this is an excellent carb source, and with your workout, cannot go to fat in any way. This change alone should be a big change for you in your hunger pangs. Bring a shaker cup to work and a MRP or protein powder(as some fiber, will slow digestion and make you feel more satiated for longer), only takes a minute to shake and drink in that 3 hr. span. Never go more than 3 hr. if you can help it, if you have muscle tone, it will be craving to be fed. The more lean tissue you have, your metabolism will be revving more, thus wanting to be fed. In other words, you can eat alot more calories than the average person without putting on weight. Letting it pass is a bad idea, you will go into a catabolic state, and your body will be devourning the very thing you are working for, lean tissue, which burns fat 24 hrs. per day.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

So does that mean, when I feel physical hunger like that, I've already started into a catabolic state of canabalizing muscle?
Also, if I'm getting that hungry that quickly, does that mean I'm not eating enough to keep up with the muscle growth? I've tried having both the oatmeal and the egg whites together in the morning, but I get too full when I try to eat that much all at once, that's why I bring the oatmeal with me for my second meal around 7ish. I do have pretty good muscle definition, but I also have some fat layers I'm trying to shed, hence the am cardio before eating. |

You can also mix protein powder into yuor oatmeal after cooking it, then it doesn't seem like as much to eat. you need to eat every 2-3 hours, sounds like your metabolism is up, keep it up!-------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort. To answer your first question, yes, most probably. If you prolong it more than 3 hrs. or so, you most definitely will go catabolic.
Getting hungry that quickly is/may be a sign you don't have your diet in order. Your meals should be satifying(satiate you), even on a diet. Your dieting does not mean you have to be hungry. You need to choose nutrient dense foods, full of fiber, that way you can eat larger portions, feel full and satisfied, while still reducing calories. Fiber is the optimal word here. For instance, you say you feel too full with the oats. That is a prime example. Oats are great soluble fiber. The key is to feel full with a minimum of calories to meet your goals. As far as the reasoning you do nothing before you do cardio, it is faulty logic. You are burning as much if not more muscle this way, and are destroying long term gains for a short term scale decrease. Bascially you can ruin your muscle to fat ratio or make it even worse, so anything you do eat will be stored due to a slowed to a crawl metabolism. Be careful here. You need some fuel beforehand, a protein drink is only about 110 calories, and will go a long ways toward preserving you lean tissue. You will in the end burn more fat this way, lean tissue burns fat 24 hrs. per day. And after your cardio, wait about an hour. With your protein drink beforehand, you will be cool, and let glucagon (glucagon is produced due to strenuous exercise, and is the opposite if you will of insulin. It readies fat to sent into the mitochondria and burnt) do its thing. Glucagon steals fatty acids away from your fat stores and instead readies them to be burned as energy. This hormone also stimulates the process which releases fat that has already been stored. So give it about an hour after your cardio, then you should be plenty hungry for your oats and eggs, and this should change your problem. ============ Quoting from cafenervosa: So does that mean, when I feel physical hunger like that, I've already started into a catabolic state of canabalizing muscle?
