if I'm trying to lose some weight, should I get lighter weights and do more reps, or get a heavier weight but do less reps, or does it even matter?

You do not need to change your workout. Keep the weights heavy as you can go, concentrate on a caloric deficit. This is what will tap into your fat stores. You can add cardio for more caloric burn, but do not do so at the expense of your weight training.

Check out my post in the diet section, "grocery list for a bodybuilder." May do well to print it out.
