Longer cardio bouts can be detrimental to you if you are trying to retain lean mass. It is one of the worst things you can do. Do 15-20 minute bouts of HIIT sprinkled in with some standard 30 minute sessions. No more.

do you actually have to become winded in order to get a good cardio workout? I mean I can do the exercise bike for maybt 6 or so miles and not be at a loss of breath, or do the elliptical machine for 3 miles, and nothing but a little burning in my legs happens. But if I go out and run for lacrosse or something I can lose my breath in like a half a mile.
Do you guys think instead of doing the bike or elliptcal for 5 miles or whatever it is, I should just go on the treadmil for 1 mile?

if you aint breathin' heavy you aint sweating... What do you do walk??? If you do 6 miles without gagging for breath you are dawdling, which is fine as any movement does burn a calorie, walking does 4 a minute.
The elliptical is my favourite to get my heart pumpimg, I find it the easiest machine to really get down and dirty with.. I can close my eyes and just spin till my lungs ache and I watch that heart clock go up and slow back to joging pace. A personal trainer got me hooked on the bikes lately, I didn't think they could be 'fun'untill then!
Here's a simple one with my bpm figures in as a guide
Interval training-
5 mins- warm up to 134 bpm or 60% of max
2 mins- to 144 bpm 65%
2 mins- to 152 bpm 75%
1 mins- to 162+ bpm 85+%
2 mins- to 148 bpm 70%
1 min- to 85+%
2 mins- to 70%
1 min- to 85%
2 mins- to 70%
2 mins- to 65%
3 mins- cool down to walk
That'll do you 23 minutes of cardio, fat burn and put a smile on your face too.. And sensible now,, if it's too tasking cut out 10 mins till it's something your used to.
