How do protein powders/protein help in the ripping stage? Is it worth it taking protein at that time since anyways you are losing muscle and cannot form new muscle at that time?

"Ripped" I just love it. If you are in the gym and trying to get "ripped", you are actually breaking down muscle fibers. Protein is one of the main nutrients that rebuilds muscle fibers. So, if you can't get all your protein from food sources, then supplementation is the answer. You would require 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight while doing resistance training. If I may add...take a protein drink within 45 min post workout.

When dieting down or in your case, "getting ripped", muscle growth is a pretty tall order, because you are using most of your depleted nutrients to maintain fat loss, so the muscles don't have much of a building block to work with.
