tboy21, as far as I know, you should know and/or estimate your daily protein intake depending on your goals. Now, every protein powder package should indicate the amount of protein grs for each scoop. Several posts have indicated that you the best times to take your protein powder are post-workout and pre-bed.
Now I'm not entirely sure about the liver/kidney failure issue, but I just read on the M&F magazine that too much protein would not be used appropiately and there is a possibility that it COULD end up being accumulated as fat... Again I just read this I'm not entirely sure this is correct, just sharing this anyways...
I take my whey protein only post-workout as bb1fit indicated (half fast - half sipping it for the rest of the hour) and has given me nice results so far.
Hope this helps and I will also like to hear another opinion about this issue

One rule never substitute whey for whole foods, protein intake I say for athletes up to 1.5 g per lb. of body weight, but like anything don't over do it. If you eat 6 times a day, only take1 to 2 protein shakes a day. One before bed time and after your workout.

You shouldn't have any kidney/liver problems unless you had problems to begin with.
I'd go with a protein source pre-workout as well as post-workout.

Don't eat soemthing or drink a protein shake to early before work out, do to the fact when you digest you burn calories as well, blood flow is diverted to the stomche to digest food, and carry it to your body, however if you workout on a full stomch, then you'll feel slow and slugish, because theres not enough blood in the body to use muscles, carry oxygen and digest food all at the same time. HUman body is remarkable but work with it and it will do you no wrong

Set your protein requirements according to your dietary requirements. Some myths still die hard. Protein will not give you kidney failure. clinical dieticians still fail to recognize the protein needs of a hard trainng bodybuilder. Drink plenty of water, any excess protein will be used for glucose if needed and the rest discarded.
