I am considering getting out of stressful world of advertising to pursue a career in personal training/physical fitness.

I have no doubts that I'd enjoy the change - I'm constantly trying to teach my girlfriends how to work out "properly" - however I am concerned with income level and my longevity potential due to my age.

What is the average yearly income for a personal trainer?

I'm a 33 year-old female - there isn't a female trainer over 30 at my gym - are there any unspoken age barriers for women in this field? This is a bit of a tough question, but I'm hoping for an honest answer.

Thanks - Lynn

PT'ing can be a great field to get into, and very rewarding when you see your clients improve, and you realized that you had a part in getting them healthy. Great personal satisfaction.

I've seen PTs' rates any where from $35 to $80 per hour. The biggest problem is building a cliental. Maybe start out doing it part time, while keeping your other job. That way you can market yourself while still being able to support yourself. As time goes on, you can build a customer base very rapidly, and, hopefully, before you know it, you'll be able to do it exclusively.

All but one of the legimate female trainers that I know are over 30. I believe it may actually be your benefit. People who are willing to sink that much money in the hopes of getting into better shape wants someone who is experienced, and not just in fitness, but life in general.

Good luck, and let us know what happens...
