I would opt 6-8 weeks at least. It takes the first week at least to get your weights and reps set when changing over, so that in essence really only leaves 3 weeks. The way I would do it is not really set a time limit, but go by how I feel and how I am proceeding. If after some period of time you like what is going on, then stay with it. Why fix what isn't broken. If you are gaining well, why switch? When you gain more fat than you like, then stop and do a "hardening" cycle, usually 2-3 weeks, this will keep those nasty love handles in check somewhat, and then when you are happy again, continue on with gaining.
