I was at a fitness seminar last night and BMR was discussed. To figure out how many calories a day you need just to stay alive the formula is for men 1.0 x your weight in kg x 24... for women the formula is 0.9 x your weight in kg x 24 (hours in the day)... this is apparently the minimum amount of calories you need just to be you for breathing, blinking and so on. Anything less than that and you would slowly waste away.

My wife and I were discussing this and she said people who are malnurished (sp?) can live on less than what their BMR is per day. I feel that is correct, but not for very long....

Can someone clarify this?

Thanks!

well only thing bad about that is( in my opinion) is your whole body is not metaboliccally active i'm 250lbs but not all of it is muscle( active tissue) I wish though!........so to me it makes more sense to take your body fat % subtract that from your body weight and thats the lean tissue you have on your body that uses engery.( muscle is active, adipose tissue is not)......................when your body is malnutreted(sp)if i'm right( i think) your metablizm actually slows down to cominsate for the lack of food, no food and it will burn fat cells for engery, and eventually start breaking down muscle for protein, bones for calicum etc. So as long as fat stores where high you could live a whiel without food. Many anaimals do this in nature, snakes actually hibernate and ar eon the border line of death: their heart only beats like 10beats a min, digestion and muscles stop being used, and brain activity slows way down, and the body temp of the body( not the head area) lowers to like 40 degrees f to save engery and heat. Only part of the brain that works are the senses manly tounge( jacobsons organ) and the pitts( body heat sensors) when a mouse comes by that the snake senses, the body reboots, heart rate increases, muscles become acive and the stomach turns back on as well as body heat elivates ready to kill and feed. Very intresting concept to me anyways, but the human body can make adjustments if it needs too.
