ok, I've had 4 kids, and haven't worked out in at least 5 1/2 years...and my diet...well let's just say it isn't the best. However, I've started eating "right" but my question is more of....well, I want to loose the pounds before I tone the muscles. I don't want to tone up what I have. what do I do???? If I work on the muscles now, I'll look like a man..no offence to men...lolmy BF is at 28% and I'd like it at 18%...I'm so lost here =\

What you have now is probably not as much muscle as you think, fat egts marbled into muscles, noy just layered on top and around them, so you look bulkier than you will be when you lean out.
Weight lifting, enough weight to challenge your muscles in the 12 - 15 rep range, will get you leaner faster(with cardio and a good diet plan) than just cardio or just eating right.

Asimmer is right. I too started out at 28%bf had thick legs and arms not to mention 39" hips on a 5'2" frame. I cleaned my diet, lifted heavy, did cardio (HIIT). Now I'm down to 15% bf. If you just diet and do cardio you'll become what I call skinny fat...basically you'll be the same shape, lumps and bumps, only a smaller version...and you'll have to continue eating like a bird to maintain it. Building muscle is far more efficient.

Plus muscle burns more calories, so the more you have, the more calories you burn, even just sitting around!!!

Both of these beautiful ladies are correct. Just remember in general. Heavy weights and fewer reps = more mass
Light weights and lots of reps = lean mass.

Yup! That's why 12-15 reps is ideal:)
I believe 4-8reps is for building mass.
