Conventional style where you pick up in a squat position or stiff legged?

They are two different things. Both necessary.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, First of all a conventional style deadlift is a complete body workout. If you want to talk about "styles" of deadlifts there are a few.
1. Conventional- narrow stance, but down, head up, this style is the hardest on your lower back. However it is primarily a quad lift.
2.Modified Sumo- feet slightly wider than shoulder width, hands inside thighs, this lift is easier on your lower back but involves more hamstrings and leg drive, however you need not pull the weight as far up as conventional style.
3.Sumo- feet all the way out to the plates this style offera the shortest range of motion.
Stiff leg deads are a hamstring exercise primarily. As far as squats try them with different stances you will target your quads differently depending on width. Good luck. Before you try to pull any crazy weight with a deadlift make sure your form is excellent or you will be sorry. Good luck

No,No,No you did not say anything wrong I just thought I would elaborate a little bit. Deadlifts are an exercise that should be loved and feared. Its all about proper form. Thats all

Agreed.

I love to fear them, and definitely fear to love them.
No form = no point. Get it right or get a chiropractor...your choice.

TRad said it perfect....its like on back day...your like "d*mn I got deadlifts", but at the same time, your like "hell yeah! ive been waiting for this all week!" As for your question goldengloves, the "conventional" deadlift you speak of should be done on back day..as it involves everything from your neck to your toes, but moreso your back. The straightlegged deadlift, when performed corectly(be careful) is an awesome lift for the hamstrings and should be performed on whichever day you have integrated hamstrings into your routine. :) Good Luck MAN!

You can also do them with a dumbell, that is just another form. :)

another form of deadlift 2 actually i have read is doing it with two barbells with lighter weights and hold one in each hand on either side of u ..........i have never doen these myself but i'm taking it helps more with balance, seems to me this is just too much trouble for what i want to do .............another kind is what i did in high school, we called it hexabar or safty deadlifts. This intresting bar is hexagonal shaped and u step inside of it, and the weights are on the out side of the hexagaon shape, and when u pick it up the bar is around u when u get off the floor..........these are good if u have a bad back, but aren't very good for working ur lower back liek the other versions..........most gyms don't have these so its not realy a main stream excercise

Ive never thought of doing deadlifts with dumbells...might have to give it a try, just curious though...what are the benefits of using dumbells as opposed to a barbell?

Good to see you back Bowers...you are absolutely right. Its no big secret but many people do not know variations. Dhurt, using db's gives more range of motion and can help with form. Obviously you can't go too heavy unless you got 200-250 db's at your gym. I do db deadlifts for toning in my hammies and glutes, as well as lower back...duh, as if you didn't know thats what it worked. ANDREW, I miss doing the hex bar(i callied it the diamond bar back in the day), you can really stack on alot of weight on that baby.

thanks j delts...I also love to use the hex bar for shrugs..after my dumbell shrugs. I like the idea of using dumbells for straight leg deadlifts...I'm definitely going to give it a try.
