Ok here's the deal I just turned 28 and recently I've been battling smoking and asthma. So I've basically gotten tired of fighting to breath due to asthma and smoking. Bad combo to start I know. I'm starting my first day at the gym tomorrow and I'm really excited. I plan on quitting smoking it's gonna be really hard but, I'm hoping to make it happen. Though I have some guestions I'd like to start walking the treadmill for a month and then start weight lifting. Is this a good start? my goal is to loss some weight and gain some muscle mass. After the 1st month I plan on getting a personal trainer to help me in this goal. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated thanks. It's just finally dawned on me after years of smoking and the damage I've done to my body I'd like to try and reverse this. Thanks again

Welcome jrbear. A number of us have quit smoking here. There are several threads in this section that may help you. "kicked butt" "stopped smoking" and "smoking" all have interesting tidbits from those here who have quit. Take a look . Welcome to FT and good luck.

hey jrbear,
Congrats on making the decision to live a higher quality life!
My asthma has gotten better and better the fitter I get and the longer I have been a non-smoker.
It will suck for a while as your lungs clean house, expect soem nasty flare-ups and bronchitis type stuff, but get through that and figure, hey, you won't have to do it again if you don't start smoking again!

Hiring a trainer is an excellent idea! They can help you with form and techinique and program design.
I thinky you could start lifting using some machines right away - it will actaully be less taxing and more rwarding than the traedmill right now, but do the treadmill also.
The best thing to keep in mind when you think it is hard is that it will get easier/more comfortable. Most people give up when the going gets tough. That is when it is most important to stay the course and achieve your goals!!
Good luck!

I have had asthma since I was maybe 11 years old...not bad, but always present. I was just thinking about it today in fact, and I realized that I haven't used an inhaler in about 3-4 weeks period (before then I'd use it anywhere from 3-12 times/wk). I'm not doctor, but I'm willing to bet my diet and exercising has a lot to do with it. I hope this might help motivate you further as it's made a big difference to me.

jrbear, I'm stupid and still smoke. Please read my profile for an article that I posted on WebMD about it. I hope you are successful in quitting, I have not been.
