I am very new to the site and have looked through a lot of the information. I think that I have a firm grasp on the main concepts. Most of the people on here seem to be in wonderful shape compared to myself. Perhaps the rest of the members just don't actively post.
Are the suggestions and programs intended for individuals that fall in the obese catagory? I guess the main reason that I ask this is because a lot of this stuff goes against mainstream "diet" do's and don'ts. I am sure that this works, but is that true for obese people, or just those that might be a little over or even under? Not trying to annoying, just very concerned about suddenly gaining even MORE weight. That would completely discourage me. |

You must be referring to the advice given here regarding eating to lose weight. True, the notion that you have to eat alot goes against what many consider to be the mainstream. However, if you look at what is said overall the principles should become clear. First, there is a difference between fat loss and weight loss. This is a distinction often overlooked in the mainstream. Second, long-term fat loss is best accomplished through an improvement of the muscle to fat ratio which increases metabolism. Many mainstreat diets lead to muscle loss which lowers metabolism. Third, higher caloric intake is achieved through the right kinds of foods in the right proportions. Many mainstream diets have a particular 'hook' a specific food or food group to limit. And finally, the higher intake of food assumes and active exercise regimen to build muscle. Many mainstream diets suggest cardio but no strength training. Also don't be confused. Alot of advice is given here to help people who want to gain mass (big muscles, bodybuild). The principles are still the same but for those who want to lose the caloric requirements are somewhat different. Remember everyone is different but all can achieve results by incorporating these principles into their diet regimen. I hope this makes sense and helps give a clearer picture.

You go agamble!! He is right I am called obese by the Mainstream, yet I am in better shape than most 150lb men I know. It is all realative. Here is my question, I know for me I tried a lot of different diets etc...why not give what we preach here and see if it helps. the eating more pertains to actual meals per day not calories. Do not go to low in cals as that may just retard the loss of fat you want...give it a try and see...good luck!-------------- LIFT HEAVY! BECOME STRONG, LIKE BULL! |

Mutt's right. Try it and see. If you will follow the exercise and diet advice you will see results. Mutt also makes a good point about his personal situation and the 'mainstream'. About a year or so ago I was pretty overweight, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, no energy, and couldn't sleep. On the advice of my doctor I lost quite a bit of weight by exercise and diet (low-fat). I got down to about 154 lbs (lost 45-50). I felt pretty good but everyone said that I looked 'sick'. So I began to eat more and workout with more weight (ft program) and I cut back on my cardio. Sure I gained a few pounds but my bodyfat dropped quite a bit. I was heavier but with less fat. On my last doctor's appt. My blood pressure was excellent (He suggested that I go off my medicine), my cholesterol was optimal, I have tons of energy, and I sleep like a baby. Plus the fact that I no longer look sick but in good health. You know what my doctor said, "You need to lose some weight". He is worried because I gained a few pounds and I didn't fit his 'one size fits all' chart. Mainstream my foot. Give it a try and see if you don't look better and feel better.

I have followed the guidelines here. I haven't lost a pound. My weight has stayed within 5 lbs + or - for 8 months.
My body fat % has dropped 9%. My cholesterol is down 26 points. My blood pressure is 118/68. Thats 2 months ago and the Doc. is saying I can lose the meds if the trend continues. I am 50 yrs old and I think at my age adding inches and inchesof muscle is almost impossible without steroid or other similar help. The best thing about this lifestyle change is the 9 inches I have lost in my abdomen since last January and the 4 inches I lost around the waist line. If you give this thing an honest shot, do your homework as well as your workout, the results will be very satisfying. -------------- Living well is the best revenge. Charlie | |

Just a lil' something I thought would help, though everyone has prolly told you... the most important thing is to break up your calorie intake in x meals a day, not just 3 huge meals a day... you should eat smaller meals every, say, 3 hours. This makes it easier to distribute the nutrients to your muscles during training.

denovas jump right in I lost a 1 pound the first week. And feel great. By the way I weigh 376-------------- I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it is gone past me I will turn to see fear's path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain |

Last resort. Problem is after the surgery you have to maintain a strict diet. Duh.
