Maybe someone can help me out? I keep hearing that if I want to loose weight I have to cut down on carbs (ie- pasta, potatoes). But the only good way to have energy is by eating carbs. So i dunno if i have to cut out carbs totally or just continue eating carbs regularly.

Go to the forum under diets and read the thread entitled "grocery list for a bodybuilder". This will give you a great list of foods that are good for you and will not put on weight, and help you lean down.

I've thought about that question alot and here's what occured to me just for discussions sake. Most people who are working hard to maintain a good, clean diet and working out are pretty much set on getting their protein. You know, striving to get the required amount and trying to get it from good sources lean meats, chicken, tuna, powders etc. As for fats, most understand the importance of limiting fats or at least striving for the good kinds in what they eat. Most people I know who are concerned with their health avoid high fat foods. Alot of which is taken care of by switching to lean meats and low-fat or non-fat dairy products. The only thing left then to cut or manipulate in your diet then is carbs. To lose weight cut carbs. To gain weight increase carbs. Now of course all carbs are not created equal and one has to be careful what types of carbs they are eating. But as far as what to cut in the diet to lose weight (better body fat) it shouldn't surprise anyone that about the only thing to manipulate is the amount and/or quality of the carbs that they consume. Is that about the way it adds up?

agamble, your analysis is very close, but this is in the latter stages when trying to get to competition levels. Then drastic measures such as cutting carbs to the bone are necessary for short periods of time. Note that I said "short period of time". We know we are going to be going back to a more healthy balanced diet soon. If you are not interested in getting to 5% bodyfat or less for competing, do not be silly and go very low carb. You need a balanced diet, just make calorie cuts of around 200-250 per day maintaining your macro amounts. Eat a low GI diet, choosing your carbs and proteins from the list I provided, and you will do fine and reach your goals. Do not jeapordize your health in an all out "fad" diet to try to accomplish some quick fat loss. Be smart, be healthy.
