Bad knee

I've got torn cartilage in my knee and to much bending will make it flare up. Should I avoid exercises like lunges or is there a way to protect it and still do them?

I would avoid exercise to give the knee time to heal.

My knee has been like this for about 14 years so I don't think it is going to heal anymore than it already has. The ligaments have healed so it's just the cartilage now.

Have you tried exercises to stabilize the knee? Most of these are done with the knee straight. For example, using a five pound ankle weight, lay on your back and lift your leg straight up. Do 3 sets of 20. Laying on the same side as your injured knee, keep your foot parallel to the ground and lift your leg. Another exercise that helped me is a static lunge. Place the injured leg in front. Step back with your opposite leg until the thigh of your injured leg is parallel to the ground. Hold that as long as you can without falling.

No I've never tried that. But I will. I've also seen these knee braces at the drug stores. Do they actually help any?

Michael53 is right on...Keep doing some kind of exercise for your leg...I have had 4 operations on my left, and am now looking to probably have another...My kneecap keeps wanting to locate itself to the left side of my leg. I thought my acl was tore, but as time goes by, I am thinking that it is a piece of cartilidge floating around in there causing severe pain at times. I have an appointment with my doctor next week. Would have been sooner, but had some other health issues to take care of...

Bottomline: do straight legged lifts everyday. Keep the muscles strong; even after all the surgeries in the past, my thighs are close to equal in size and strength..The joint itself is kind of a genetic defect, small joint supporting a fat man...

Anyway, see the doc, continue to do leg lifts, and don't forget stretching the hams...

Knee braces always seem to cause great pain for me, and seemed to create more problems then without. Wrapping the knees, well, I wrap the knees when working the legs. Not sure if it is a benefit or not, but it seems to keep them warmer, more lubricated, and makes me concentrate a little more on correct form/speed when lifting.

Knee braces do help, at least when running, jumping, and that kind of thing. I've never worn one while lifting, although I have seen many people do that. Also, the best advice I can give you for cartillage injuries is to try a supplement known as glucosatrin, it helps to regenerate cartilage, even after your body stops regenerating it on its own. I take it even though I don't have cartilage damage because it helps my joints in my wrist feel better.
