I have lost a nice amount of weight by just dieting but I am now looking to turn it into high gear by going to the Gym. I have been going the past few weeks and I was hoping someone could help me with a question. I am looking to loose 30-40lbs and build mass. So here is my question.
It seems everywhere I read, that in order to loose weight I must do Cardio and a lot of it. If I train every body part, once a week with solid intensity over the course of 4 days. How much Cardio should I be doing? Its not that I dont want to do Cardio, I just dont want to be doing to little an conversely I dont want to do to much and hurt my abilty to build leans muscle.

First, you need to have an effective diet. So, what does your diet look like? And cardio wise, I find that I always get the best results from a 30-45 min session at the end of my workout. If you are working out 4 days per week, I would suggest 30-45 min. at the end of each days workout. but, you should taper that as you see fit.

My diet is based ont the Atkins, not doing it specifically but am following a high protein, low carb diet. typical day is
egg whites with tomatoe/cheddar and turkey
Mid morning snack-peanuts or cashews
lunch--chef salad, or grilled chicken, or some lean meat with a vegetable
Post workout -protein shake
dinner- 14-16 oz meat with a vegetable (broccoli usually)
I have gone from 265 to 229 just by dieting. I want kick things into high gear with the excercising.

Looking to lose fat and build mass(2 totally separate things), I would not do your cardio immediately post training(weights). You will of course burn calories as mentioned, but much of it will be the muscle you are trying to build. And this in the end is what will stoke your metabolism and burn fat. Do not sacrifice long term for a short term fix. Separate your cardio by 6-8 hours or thereabouts if you must do it on the same day, but even better would be to do it on opposite days, and mix in standard cardio with HIIT. This will raise baseline metabolism and burn fat for the day. Standard cardio should be no more than 30 minutes, HIIT 12-16min.

Not to knock your "atkins" style diet, but if you will be training at the gym with weights and cardio, you will definately have to have some complex carbs, moregood fats and protein. Your body will need the extra fuel.
Good Luck.
