How Much Cardio when trying to bulk up?

I'm trying to "mass up" and I ussually run for about twenty minutes on a treadmill doing intervals before my evening workout. And I wouldn't mind adding another 20 minute morning run but I'm afraid it would be counter productive.

I work out 4 times a week and only run on those days as well. What do you think?

First off running 20 minutes before your resistance training is very counterproductive to gaining mass. You are using much needed glycogen, and robbing yourself of being able to properly overload a muscle, which is what stimulates growth. Try to separate by 6-8 hours your weights and cardio at worst case, and an even better case would be doing them on separate days. When "bulking", do your cardio enough to keep up cardiovascular health, and help keep fat down a bit. Other than that, concentrate on heavy training and eating and resting.

Most helpful, I think I'll scratch the evening run and switch to the morning then.

If I could ask one more question; I have been eating six meals a day following a high protein diet. And it has been working but I've also been gaining some fat. I went from about %10 to %13 while gaining 25 pounds.

My question is does fat help build muscle faster or aid in anyway building it? Or is that just one of those myths? Obviously I can shed the fat after "bulking" with switching my focus.

%3 for adding 25 lbs isn't bad at all. At this point I would go ahead & change the focus to get rid of it though as more will just take a longer period of time to lose which brings a risk of lean muscle loss while doing it. The good news is that %3 will go pretty quickly & you will be back on the mass program in no time at all with very little or even no muscle loss. Youl almost always gain alittle fat in a mass phase if the phase it to be successful.

I have heard here that taking CLA during your gaining cycles can help with the amount of fat you gain. But it sounds like you are doing well without it.

You are correct in what you say azredhead. CLA is good on a gaining cycle.
